With the looming fears that the PRR and NKP Signals were coming down at the diamond in Plymouth, I figured today, since I had the day off, would be a better day than never to try to document one of the area short lines that I had left to get a good run out of; The Elkhart and Western Railroad out of Argos, IN. The crews usually go OD pretty early, and today was no exception. I arrived just when they had arrived, and witnessed them fire up the locomotives. Pioneer has always been known to have pretty smoky units featured on their wide locomotive roster, and these GP16s were no exception to that. PREX 1608 is fairly new to the Elkhart and Western. My last visit here was in 2019 and it hadnt arrived on the property yet. I believe it was brought in to replace the PREX 1600 (foreground) which had been plagued with several mechanical issues. The E&W practices a push/pull method for most of their trains, so a second unit was definitely needed. Always good to see a unit that has the corporate logo on it. Should be a fun day! |

| Description: |
NS L40 was working in the Argos Yard as the Pioneer Units were being fired up. I knew that R203 (the E&W symbol) would have to go nab a couple cars out of the NS Yard so they would have to wait on NS L40 to get out of the way. I went and sat by NS for a bit, but after a while, I got impatient and went to use the restroom at the Caseys on the other side of town. Of course when I walked out, NS L40 was leaving, and the chase was on. That "chase" wasnt very easy either. I had to fly down State Road 10 just to make a bit of headway. I finally realized that getting it anywhere other than an open field wasnt going to happen, so when I finally got out ahead of it enough to stop and get out, I did, and grabbed the train doing an easy 60 MPH flying across the fields between Argos and Rutland, IN. |

By the time got back into town, R203 was grabbing a solo pellet hopper out of the yard. A switching move that took less than 5 minutes. The units were already in a 1x1 configuration which surprised me, but I guess it is easier to round the bend south of the diamond to get back onto their own rails with a unit on both ends. |

I went north of the diamond expecting them to come north with that solo hopper car. But, they never did. They did a lot of messing around in the siding just south of the diamond. I pulled out the long lens to look down and see what they were doing. I could see that there were some gondolas on the siding that they were maneuvering around. Eventually I could tell that they had set aside one unit to put on the other end of the string of gondolas. Gondolas dont go up to Plymouth, only to Rochester, so today was a Rochester day. I was a little disheartened at first that I wasnt going to get my signals today, but at least I could document the train to Rochester, which I would have done eventually at some point anyway. After getting everything aired up, the train began its trek south to Rochester with 5 gondolas and 1 hopper car and a unit on each end. My first shot was set up at the intersection of 18th Road and Juniper Road where the train came by a Rail Excavator. They had clearly been doing some clearing out in this spot recently. Maybe someting new is going in? |
