When Porter 8902 at the Galesburg tie plant finally wore out and was retired in late 1964, the 9107 ( built by GE in February 1941 c/n 12952 ) was moved to Galesburg ( from Nebraska ) as a replacement. Renumbered 8903, it was outfitted with the large buffer plates removed from the 8902. The 8903 was withdrawn from service in 1974 and sat forlornly in the Galesburg yard until late 1977, when it was finally scrapped. |

Built as CB&Q GP30 974 in May 1963 (c/n 28296) on EMD Order 7652, it became BN 2251 sometime after the March 2, 1970 merger. In October 1989 it was rebuilt by Morrison-Knudsen to GP39M 2824, and in May 2001 became BNSF 2824. Note the horns at the back of the unit. The plan was to keep the horns from freezing up in winter by placing them over the first radiator fan, which cycled on first, thus blowing warm radiator air over the bells of the horns, keeping them defrosted. Im not sure how successful this was. |
