It was retired by the BN in August 1983 (although it may have been out of service earlier, note the capped stack), later becoming ILSX 1366. I'm no expert, but it looks to me like an oil leak sidelined this locomotive. |

The lower case "s" in the CB&Q model designation (SD9s) indicates a Single control stand, unusual for the CB&Q, which generally had the road switchers equipped with dual control stands. By July 1981, this locomotive will return to this same spot with a chopped short hood. It appears to have picked up a second fuel tank sometime in the future. |

This is the second U30C numbered 5301, and quoting from the book, "BN Annual 1975-1976", here is the story; "The only new power delivered in 1975 was 30 U30C's units 5300-5305 (2nd) , 5353-5364 (2nd), Locotrol masters 5834-5839, and Locotrol remores 5939-5944. A total of 26 of the new U30C's went into dead storage (upon delivery) before a turnaround in business came in late July. Wonder how to tell the first and second seri{s of 5300's apart? Here are some noticeable differences: Anti-climber pilot on the new units (2nd 5300's) , round-top headlight on new units, flat top on old units, no Locotrol antenna on new units, new-style door latches on new units (photos used in the book show a round opening for the older style and a square opening for the new style), no sight glasses on new units." For the record, the first 5300's were six U30C's 5300-5305 built in January-February 1972 (c/n 38241-38246), re-numbered 5800-5805 in October 1973. They were Locotrol master units. |

These are the controls for a locomotive that was built for the CB&Q as #466 in April 1969 (c/n 36994), one of a nine unit order of U23Cs, the only ones on both the CB&Q and the BN rosters. This photo was shot in the dead line at Cicero. This locomotive was officially retired in June 1984. You might ask how I could be sure this was #5206, and my proof is the road number chalked on this control panel, if you look closely. And I did not even see the smiley face on the upper middle gauge until I posted this photo. |

Of all of EMD's poor designs, including the BL2, I think this unfortunate notch in the short hood of 6595 for the hand brake is the winner. How difficult would it have been to put a piece of sheet metal in the front to complete the facade and protect the hand brake from the elements. This had to be one of those Friday afternoon designs where the draftsman was concerned about going home for the weekend and took shortcuts to complete the job. End of rant. |
