CB&Q VO-1000 9357
Description:
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad VO-1000 9357 at Clyde, Illinois on May 9, 1965, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built in November 1943 (c/n 70120) it was traded in February 1966. The blob in the sky is a plane taking off from O'Hare Airport. Also of interest is the panel truck in the background, complete the the Burlington Route logo on the door. Also, the dirt in the sky is a plane landing at Midway Airport.

Description:
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad Baldwin VO-1000 9357 at Clyde, Illinois on May 9, 1965, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built in November 1943 (c/n 70120), it was traded for new power in February 1966. The word BURLINGTON has replaced the EVERYWHERE WEST slogan that once appeared on this side of the locomotive, evidence of that slogan still shows in the form of fabricated metal strips welded over the louvers below and behind the last N in BURLINGTON.

CB&Q F7 164A
Description:
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad F7 164A at Clyde, Illinois on June 6, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. When it was built in May 1950 (c/n 9693) on EMD Order 3021A, this locomotive was numbered 164 and mated with two F3's (137C and 137D) delivered in October 1948 to produce a semi-permanently-coupled 4500 horsepower locomotive 164. It remained in this configuration until a few months after this photo, when the drawbars were removed and replaced with couplers. At that time, the glass-beaded numberboard between the headlights was removed and the number with the letter A suffix was painted in its place. It was traded in as credit on an order of SD45's in February 1969.

CB&Q VO-1000 9376
Description:
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad VO-1000 9376 at Clyde, Illinois on June 6, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This was one of 30 Baldwin VO-1000's allotted to the CB&Q during World War II, when restrictions were placed on the locomotive builders by the War Production Board. The Q would have preferred EMD switchers, but EMD was restricted to building FT road diesels, and the switcher production was split between Alco and Baldwin. As it turned out, the Burlington was the third largest owner of VO-1000's, behind the Santa Fe (59) and the Frisco (38). This one was built during November 1944 (c/n 70318) and retired and traded to GE for new power during March 1966. However, in 1967 GE sold this and ten other CB&Q VO-1000's to the Atlantic Coast Line, and it continued working on the ACL (after July 1, 1967, the Seaboard Coast Line) in CB&Q paint and number until retired by the SCL sometime during 1977-78.

CB&Q NW1 9201 and GP-30 964
Description:
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad NW1 9201 and GP30 964 at Clyde, Illinois, on June 27, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler Number 9201 was built by Electro-Motive Corporation (EMC) in December 1937 (c/n 776), and traded to EMD in July 1965 for a SW-1200. It is one of 27 NW1s built, and two were owned by the CB&Q. The NW1 was powered by a 900 hp Winton 201A V-12 diesel prime mover coupled to a GE main generator driving four GE traction motors. By 1930, EMC and the Winton Engine Company had become subsidiaries of General Motors. The spotting feature of the NW1 is the side vents at the top of the hood at the radiator end. The N in NW indicates Nine hundred horsepower, and the W indicates a Welded frame. This locomotive could be ordered with a Cast frame, producing a NC1, and could also come with Westinghouse electrical gear.

CB&Q SD7 315
Description:
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroas SD7 315 at Clyde, Illinois on July 22, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built in August 1953 (c/n 18335) on EMD Order 5242, it became BN 6038 and was retired in September 1983. The rectangular item overlapping the second radiator opening is an exhaust stack for a Vapor standby heater. Most of the CB&Q GP7, GP9, SD7, and SD9 series diesels had these standby heaters installed. The purpose was to allow the prime mover to be shut down in cold weather, and the standby heater would be turned on and heat and circulate the cooling water to prevent freezing. In practice, the prime mover was usually left idling because of the difficulty restarting it with cold batteries.

CB&Q F7 164A
Description:
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad F7 164A at Clyde, Illinois on October 31, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Thic locomotive was built in May 1950 (c/n 9693) and traded to EMD in February 1969. It was delivered as 164 and mated with two F3's previously delivered as 137C and 137D. The F3's were renumbered as 164, and were semi-permanently coupled to the newly delivered F7 to form a single locomotive numbered 164. Suffix letters were assigned to the individual units for maintenance purposes, but not displayed in the numberboards. As delivered, the cab units had glass-beaded numberboards below the top headlight. Sometime between July 28 and October 31, 1965, this locomotive was shopped and the drawbars were replaced with couplers, the glass-beaded numberboards were removed, and the road number with the suffix was painted below the top headlight. The suffix letters were added to the numberboards, and a suffix letter was added to the side number below the side cab window. It is seen here still coupled to the original F3's to which it was assigned, former 137C and 137D, now 164B and 164C.

CB&Q F3 164C
Description:
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad F3 164C at Clyde, Illinois on October 31, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Delivered October 1948 as the rear cab of semi-permanently coupled F3 A/B/B/A set 137, for maintenence purposes it was numbered 137D, but only 137 was displayed in the numberboard. In May 1950 the CB&Q acquired 10 F7 A's, and broke the 137 (and 138) sets into A/B F3's and mated them with the new F7 cabs, producing four three-unit motors (CB&Q term for coupled locomotives) 163 - 166. Again, the suffix letter was not displayed in the numberboard until the 1960's when the motors were broken up into individual units, couplers were installed at both ends, and the suffix letter was painted on the nose and applied to the numberboard.

CB&Q U25B 100
Description:
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad U25B 100 at Clyde, Illinois on February 19, 1966, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. The U25B was a bold move, since the CB&Q was a loyal EMD customer for a couple of decades. One assumes there is a story from the front offices to go with this photo, but the CB&Q acquired its first non-EMD road units in this order of these six U25B's (#'s 100-105) in 1964. It surely sent a message to EMD. This locomotive was built in September 1964 (c/n 35194), became BN 5424, and was retired in May 1981. Behind the U25B is a F3B and an SD24. On the other track is GP7 233.

CB&Q F3 116D
Description:
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad F3 116D at the Clyde, Illinois Diesel House on March 26, 1966, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. You might think this is creative framing, with the flanged wheels appearing out of focus in the lower left. Truth be told, I was using the next set of wheels as my tripod, and I could not move the wheels in front out of frame. This locomotive was built in October 1947 (c/n 4405) on EMD Order E790 and traded in for a U28B during December 1966.

CB&Q U25B 102
Description:
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad U25B 102 feeling out of place at Clyde, Illinois on May 7, 1966, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive was built in September 1964 (c/n 35196), became BN 5426, and was retired in May 1981. It appears it was last used as a trailing unit, otherwise the cab shades would have been extended. The GE units were relatively new to the people at Clyde on this date.

CB&Q U23C 467
Description:
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad U23C 467, date and location unknown, photograph by John J. Ziemba, Chuck Zeiler collection. Unfortunately the print was unlabeled except for the name which I presumed to be the photographer. I chose the date and location based on the appearance of the locomotive, which looks like it was just delivered. I'm still wrestling with the idea of locating the stainless steel model plate at the bottom of the white paint swoop.
