The following is from BN Annual 1977-80, edited by Hol Wagner: Beginning in September 1978, Chicago & Illinois Midland units began operating on the BN out of Galesburg, Illinois in exchange for the BN units which were running through from Peoria to Havanna, IL over P&PU/C&IM trackage with Commonwealth Edison coal trains. The coal trains had been running this way since 1970, but the C&IM had been paying for the use of BN power. At first, C&IM SD9's and SD18's were the common 'payment power', but shortly the Midland's six SD38's became the standard units. |

Built as CB&Q SD7 301 in May 1953 (c/n 18321) on EMD Order 5242, it became BN 6024 and one source states that it was retired in September 1983. It is stencilled CENTRALIA, perhaps it lingered a bit before being forwarded to Clyde for storage and disposition. I can't be certain, but it's possible that the rear exhaust stack is covered with some white material. |
