Hoping to take advantage of the anticipated increase in passenger flow heading to the 1984 Worlds Fair in New Orleans, Amtrak hatched a plan to connect its Kansas City/St. Louis traffic to the southbound City of New Orleans. To accomplish this, a short run was needed between St, Louis and the IC main in south-central Illinois. Two potential routes were evaluated: the Southern, which would catch the CoNO in Centralia; and IC which would intercept in DoQuoin. Here, one of the evaluation trains checks out the IC line through Belleville. Eventually, however, the Southern route was selected, and the resultant River Cities would ply the rails from April 1984 until November 1993. |

Now all that's left here is a curved ridge that used to support the roadbed running through this same cultivated field. Back in 84, however, you could still catch the afternoon local headed west for E. St. Louis. |

There is a real beauty of a portrait of this lead GP40 by Andrew Koenigsberg (in his album Some misc. roster shots) from the Summer of 1978. Lets just say that by the Winter of 87, it was looking pretty rough. The 2nd unit is interesting not just because it is still in GM&O colors, but because there are two different stories about its eventual fate. One has it going to Goderich & Exeter 9543 (later re-numbered GEXR 3835), The other having it end up with NECR via Conrail and then Helm Leasing. Guess I'll need to look into that further.. |

First of all, I know nothing about NdeM beyond what Ive just learned through research. But here are a couple of SD40-2s in shiny new NdeM colors that suddenly appeared in a siding on the ex-ICG line just east of Belleville, IL in March of 1988 -- and there they stayed for quite a few days if not weeks. What were they doing there? Near as I have been able to determine, they had just been re-built by EMD and were on their way for delivery south of the border. Why they were left cooling their heels in this spot is one mystery - never resolved - but then there is another. According to centexrails.blogspot.com, these two units were delivered through Texas in December...of 2006! Somebodys dates are off, but Im pretty sure of mine. Then again, could these two have taken 18 years to drift their way south...?? |
