WMATA Test Run - 3/27/1976 |
| Description: |
Interesting UPI photo of the test run for the new Washington D.C. Metro subway system. The press release reads "WASHIGNTON D.C. ; With Washington's first subway system scheduled to officicially begin operation on its first section March 27, one of the Metro trains makes a practice run on one of th elevated tracks a few blocks from the Capitol (background) recently." No exact date for this test run was given so the official first day date was used. |

B&O yard |
| Description: |
While in Washington in August 1976, we rode the then new DC Metro, which had all of six stops open on ther Red Line. The end of service at the time was Rhode Island Av, which was on an elevated viaduct. The platform gave a view of a B&O yard, in which, far down into the yard, a B&O geep is switching. |

Railfan window |
| Description: |
One of the good things about the cars that equipped the Metro was that they had good windows in the front, full width of the car. This allowed someone in the front of the car the ability to see everything the motorman saw, as well as watch him run the train, though with automatic train operation, mostly what they did was watch. It was interesting, compared to what I was used to on the NYCTA. |

Rhode Island Av |
| Description: |
The last open stop at this time on the Red Line was Rhode Island Av. Dad got a shot of the station. A plus was the B&O yard down below, which had a B&O geep working farther down. We were staying in a motel in Alexandria, which was a lot cheaper than in DC. We'd drive into the city, passing Potomac Yard going and coming. I saw a lot of Chessie, RF&P, and CR power, but was not able to get photos. The real treat was the night we went past the yard and there was a Chessie train about to roll out on the ex C&O. In consist was WM 7151, one of the red, white and black F 7's. It was after dark, so no photo, but 40 years later, the memory is still vivid. |

Wasington Metro |
| Description: |
In 1976, we went to DC for a week, mostly doing the typical tourists stuff. Rather than drive around, however, we decided it would be easier to park somewhere and take the subway around the city, which was(and is) a good idea. The system at the time was basic, as it had opened only several months earlier, only a start on the great transit system it has turned into. Dad got this shot of a train at one of the cavernous stations that were typical of the line. |

Cavernous and dark |
| Description: |
The Washington Metro used indirect lighing in its stations, which I always thought were dark compared to other cities, especially New York, where I rode most of the time. Seen from the pedestrian overpass, a look at one of the stations, which looks quite dim from this angle, though the light was better at platform level. |
