Seaboard Coast Line ABA Lash UP, RF&P Tr. 91, The Champion |
| Description: |
Taken from L'Enfant Plaza. This Florida-bound train is about 5 min. out of Washington Union Station. It has gone through the First Street Tunnel behind the Capitol for a few city blocks, is now headed west on ex-PRR tracks (with catenary), but is about to turn south again to cross the Potomac River and acquire RF&P tracks. It's 5 days before Amtrak Day and the Champion will be history. |

The Southern Crescent |
| Description: |
The passenger train tracks from Union Station go through the tunnel under First Street right behind the Capitol at the left. The freight tracks make a much wider swing behind the Capitol and to the north never needing a tunnel. The catenary is for the PRR electric freight locomotives so they can make it to the Potomac Yards and does not go through the tunnel. Pantographs would not fit. The shot was taken from L'Enfant Plaza. |

Extra Board. Here is an original photo that I took at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC, in December of 1971. Shown here is the Camden & Amboy's "John Bull." This is the original 2-4-0 wood-burning steam locomotive that was built in England around 1830, disassembled and sent across the Atlantic Ocean on a wood-hulled ship with sails, and then reassembled for revenue service in New Jersey. |
