8 axle tank car seen |
| Description: |
An 8 axle tank car, sometimes referred to as a "Whale on Rails", is seen in Columbia AL on the Chattahoochee Bay RR. Information from the past few weeks indicates that many, if not all, of these cars are being retired and scrapped. This one is stenciled "Do Not Load. Moving to be Dismantled" which seems to verify this. There capacity in enormous, this one having a load limit of 382,800 pounds and able to carry over 38,000 gallons. For perspective, a large over the road truck used to deliver gasoline usually holds around 9000 gallons. |

Odd sight |
| Description: |
Former Virginia Rail Express locomotives, now owned by GWI and working their various short lines in the Dothan AL area, are seen on the head end of a empty Scherer coal train. I am not sure how many cars are in the train but I would estimate over 100 as they go out of sight before I can see the last car. My only guess is GWI will be storing this train somewhere on the system perhaps on the old spur that goes to the Farley Nuclear plant near Columbia. |

Former Virginia Rail Express locomotives pulling an empty Scherer coal train in Columbia AL. A very odd sight. The VRE locomotives were recently purchased by GWI for use on their lines in the Dothan AL area while the only thing I can guess about the empty coal train is perhaps it is headed for storage. |

Chattahoochee Bay local |
| Description: |
The Chattaioochee Bay local is seen crossing it's namesake Chattahoochee River with a former Virginia Railway Express GP39-2 leading a SW1500 still in a AN paint scheme. BAYL 511BAYL 511 WB on the CHAT mainline crossing the Chattahoochee river at Columbia, AL. Ive been wanting to get a shot of my Deddy crossing the river for some time, but now that he is retired thaK'll never happen. With a Bay Line unit still in the classic green and yellow.....it just doesn't get any better than that! |
