Title:
GTW 5856, IC 3129, et al.
Description:
One CN local waits behind the depot/yard office while another local passes in front of it at the former C&NW yard at Appleton Junction, WI on 26 Oct. '18. The local at right is departing for Little Chute and Kaukauna and had two locomotives, IC 3129 and IC 3138. The local at left, powered by GTW 5856, was returning from Kimberly and Combined Locks. There used to be a diamond under IC 3129, from ca. 1874 until at least 1968, where the MLS&W crossed the C&NW. When the MLS&W was absorbed by the C&NW on 1 Sep. 1893, that line became the Ashland Div. of the C&NW. The white building in the background is the former home of the Harry H. Long Moving and Storage Co., 1001 S. Douglas St., Appleton, WI. That building dates to at least 1953, when it was listed in the local directory (it was not listed in ’51). The building has a spur, but it hasn’t been used for quite a while (except for occasional MoW equipment). Now called the Harry H. Long Moving Storage & Express, Inc., the company, founded in 1917, is still family owned. It moved to a larger facility in Town of Clayton, Winnebago Co., WI in 2001.

CN 9455
Description:
A CN local crosses W. 2nd St. while setting out a string of cars at the former C&NW yard at Appleton Junction, WI on 8 Nov. '18. Train will soon continue on to Little Chute and Kaukauna. Carter's Caboose, 1428 W. 2nd St., a small, old, rail side tavern, stands at right. It dates to at least 1930, when it was a soft drink establishment owned by Hubert J. Merkel and August F. Brandt (Prohibition was still in effect). By ’36 it was a tavern operated by Albert Giesen, owned by Mrs. Gretchen Merkel. By ’38 it was Bob’s Tavern, still owned by Mrs. Merkel. It was the Junction Tavern from at least ’43-’71, still owned by Mrs. Merkel until at least ’60 (there were at least two different owners between ’67-’71). At some point in the ‘70s it became Pete’s Junction (possibly Palomino Pete’s Junction). It was called Netticoat Junction ca. the ‘90s (owned by Joanne M. ‘Nettie’ Nett).

IC 3138 and EJE 703
Description:
A CN local momentarily fouls W. 2nd St. while setting out cars at the former C&NW yard at Appleton Junction, WI on 29 Nov. '18. After finishing up here, the local will continue on to Little Chute and Kaukauna. A few blocks away, another local waits to enter the yard after working Kimberly and Combined Locks. Silly me, I thought that current law prohibits any of us from attempting to “drive any vehicle through, around, or under any crossing gate or barrier at a railroad crossing while such gate or barrier is closed or is being opened or closed.” Evidently, this truck driver feels that the law does not apply to him. The near side gate is just out-of-frame to the right; you need to zoom in to see the far side gate partially visible between the locomotive and the truck.

CN 4721
Description:
A CN local approaches S. Perkins St. while headed northeast and preparing to stop at the former C&NW yard at Appleton Junction, WI on 23 Dec. '18. I can't read the sign for the current occupant, but the building at right was home to All About Packaging, Inc., Warehouse #2, 1325 S. Perkins St., in the Southwest Industrial Park, Appleton, WI, not too long ago. There is a spur along the south side of the building, but the turnout for the spur was removed years ago. The oldest part of the building was completed in Mar. '60, the new facility for the Fox Valley Sheltered Workshop. Inc. (started in '55 to create employment opportunities for the disabled). It became Valley Packaging Industries Inc. ca. mid- or late-'80s. After they moved to a new facility, this one has been home to Valley Planing Mill, Inc., followed by Perfect Patterns, Inc. The All About Packaging, Inc., main facility is a couple of blocks away at 2200 W. Everett St. Founded at Appleton, WI in '96, they specialize in thermoformed packaging. The Mountable Raised Curb System with Vertical Panels (one variant of Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) approved traffic channelization devices) was installed circa May of this year as part of Appleton's quest for so-called 'Quiet Zone' status.

A CN local momentarily fouls W. 2nd St. as it prepares to set out a string of cars at the former C&NW yard at Appleton Junction, WI on 30 Dec. '18. After completing their work here, the local willcontinue on to Little Chute, and Kaukauna. Carter's Caboose, 1428 W. 2nd St., a small, old, rail side tavern, stands to the right. It dates to at least 1930, when it was a soft drink establishment owned by Hubert J. Merkel and August F. Brandt (Prohibition was still in effect). The former Appleton Wood Products Co. factory, now part of the Miller Electric facility, can be seen beyond Carter's Caboose. Built in 1916, the walls include some intricate brickwork. The keystones above the windows (now concealed) depict bowling pins. Of course, all of the interesting brickwork, painstakingly crafted by skilled masons 102 years ago, has been defaced and obscured with cheap metal siding, which Miller Electric applied at some point after they acquired the historic facility ca. 1975.

I'm not sure of their origin or destination, but it’s odd to see two locomotives passing through sans freight cars. IC 3120, the local power, rests on the yard lead. The north leg of the wye is hidden beneath the snow on this side of IC 3120.

CN 9515, et al.
Description:
A CN local passes behind the depot/yard office as it prepares to set out a string of cars at the former C&NW yard at Appleton Junction, WI on 10 Nov. '19. Usually they stay on the main line and pass in front of the depot/yard office while making their setout, but this isn't the first time I've watched them do it this way. Local would continue on to Little Chute and Kaukauna and had two locomotives, CN 9515 and GTW 5812. There used to be a diamond in front of where the depot/yard office sits, about where the sidewalk leading to the front door crosses the tracks, from ca. 1874 until at least 1968, where the MLS&W crossed the C&NW. CN 9515, GTW 5812, CN 4705
Description:
A heavily powered CN local crosses W. 2nd St. as it prepares to set out a string of cars at the former C&NW yard at Appleton Junction, WI on 15 Nov. '19. Local would continue on to Little Chute and Kaukauna. Carter's Caboose, 1428 W. 2nd St., a small, old, rail side tavern, is partially visible at left. It dates to at least 1887, when it was a grocery store operated by Peter Leininger. By 1901 it was a sample room (saloon) operated by John Sigl. By ‘30 it was a soft drink establishment owned by Hubert J. I haven’t learned how long it has been Carter’s Caboose.

IC 3108 and GTW 4907
Description:
An unusually small CN local pauses in front of the depot/yard office at the former C&NW yard at Appleton Junction, WI, on 7 Jun. '20. There used to be a diamond right about where the rear truck of IC 3108 is, from ca. 1874 until at least 1968, where the MLS&W crossed the C&NW. When the MLS&W was absorbed by the C&NW on 1 Sep. 1893, their line became the Ashland Div. of the C&NW. The white building behind the depot/yard office is the former home of the Harry H. Long Moving and Storage Co., 1001 S. Douglas St. This building dates to at least 1953, when it was listed in the local directory (it was not listed in ’51). The building has a spur, but it hasn’t been used for quite a while (except for occasional MoW equipment). Now called Harry H. Long Moving Storage & Express, Inc., the company, founded in 1917, is still family owned. It moved to a larger facility in Town of Clayton, Winnebago Co., WI in 2001.

The pitiful remnants of a BNSF 3-bay covered hopper at the CN, former C&NW, yard at Appleton Junction, WI, on 10 Apr. '21. I have to wonder why it was in the process of being cut up here. This car had been sitting here for a couple of days, but I didn't make a note of the number. I had no idea of its impending fate.

A FV&LS (or FOXY) train crosses S. Whitman Ave. as it prepares to switch Quality Carriers, 700 S. Whitman Ave., at the northwest corner of the wye at the former CN, originally C&NW, yard at Appleton Junction, WI, on 12 Mar. '22. This track, which is now part of the north leg of the wye, is a remnant of the MLS&W main line which once ran from Milwaukee to Ashland. The facility partially visible in the background to the right is Foremost Farms USA, 1815 W. Spencer St. They had a spur which was removed ca. Sep. '20, it had not been used for quite a while. An old caboose is displayed in the background to the left. It is painted as RI 17177. Some references claim it was not their caboose, but MILW. It is currently for sale. I wish I could afford to purchase it (the price is not listed, but, as the old saying goes, if you have to ask, you can't afford it).
