Description:  No.25 - The Duquesne - with a pair of U25C helpers and three E units with 22 cars and healthy head-end traffic is coming out of Scotch Run Curve at MP 241 on this first day of September, 1966 at a time when renumbering of locomotives had begun for the pending Penn-Central merger. PRR helpers on the point were referred to as "snappers". Note the lead E unit still has its trainphone antennas.

Description:  PC Power. Here is an original photo that I took at the Penn Central Railroad's Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania, during the Summer of 1968. Shown here are PC engines #6171, #2330, and another unit whose number is not recorded. #6171 is an SD45 built by GM-EMD in December of 1967 and rated at 3,600 horsepower. #2330 is a GP35 built by GM-EMD in January of 1965 and rated at 2,500 horsepower. They are pulling an eastbound mixed-cargo freight train down the Allegheny Mountains and around the Curve to Altoona and points East. Wave to the engineman!

Description:  AHC. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide by an unidentified photographer that was taken at the Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 30 May 1969. Shown here (L to R) are Penn Central Railroad engines #2233, #6066, #6077, and another unit whose number is not recorded. All were built by GM-EMD for the Pennsylvania Railroad; their PRR road numbers were the same. #2233 is a GP-30 built in April of 1963, rated at 2,250 horsepower, and presently on display (in Conrail colors!) at the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania in Strasburg. #6066 and #6077 are both SD-40's built in February of 1966 and rated at 3,000 horsepower each. Here, they are pulling a TrucTrain around the Curve and up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin, Pittsburgh, and points West.

Pictured on the left is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #1361, a K-4S (4-6-2) "Pacific" built in Juniata during May of 1918 and retired in May of 1956 after 38 years of faithful service. Pictured on the right is Penn Central Railroad engine #6040 and perhaps two more units whose road numbers are not recorded. #6040 is an SD-40 built (for the PRR) in February of 1966 and rated at 3,000 horsepower. Silent in the center is PRR K-4S "Pacific" #1361. Partially visible at the left is Kittanning Point; the valley beyond it marks the route of the old Kittanning Indian Trail.
