Shown here are our three ALCo locomotives pulling the "Special" around the Horseshoe Curve. Visible on the right is the K-4S (4-6-2) "Pacifjc" locomotive #1361, as well as some folks who have gathered to watch the "Special" navigate the Curve on its way down the Allegheny Mountains to Altoona.

Description:  Here is a post card via Peter Outerbridge entitled "Horseshoe Curve." Caption On Reverse: "Horseshoe Curve. Altoona, Pa. Pennsylvania Railroad K-4s No. 1361 on display at the Horseshoe Curve. This locomotive was the premier steam passenger engine on the PRR. The railroad donated this engine to the city of Altoona in recognition of decades of service. It was also constructed in Altoona." Shown here is PRR engine #1361, a K-4S (4-6-2) "Pacific" built in Juniata in May of 1918, retired in September of 1956 after amassing over 2,469,000 revenue miles, enshrined at the Curve on 8 June 1957, restored for excursion service during 1987-1988, withdrawn from service and disassembled because of safety concerns, and is now being restored again for further excursion service. The arrival of the Lancaster Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society's "Horseshoe Curve Excursion" was eclipsed by a really, really long westbound mixed-cargo freight train sporting rear-end pushers. Shown here is PRR engine #8612, an AS-24M built by the American Locomotive Company in 1956 and rated at 2,400 horsepower. One of the "Excursion's" passenger cars is partially visible on the left, while Milepost 242 sits on the right.

Description:  Volkmer. Here is an image of a photo by William D. Volkmer that was taken at the Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania, in April of 1966. Prominent here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #5716, an EP-22 built by GM-EMD in October of 1952 and rated at 2,250 horsepower. In this context, it's powering a passenger train around the Curve and down the Allegheny Mountains to Altoona and points East. On display at the left is PRR engine #1361, a K-4S (4-6-2) "Pacific" built in Juniata during May of 1918, retired in September of 1956, enshrined at the Horseshoe Curve on 08 June 1957, restored for excursion service during 1987-1988, then withdrawn from service and disassembled due to safety concerns, and still not reassembled to wholeness.
