Description:  Here is a photo that was included in the "Altoona Area Railroad Pictorial History" edited by Linda White and published in 1996 by The Altoona Mirror, page 9. Photo Caption: "K-4 engine No. 623 takes on sand at the East Altoona Coal Wharf in this photo taken in the 1940s. Coal and water also were replenished at the facility, which was razed in 1968." Prominent here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #623, a K-4S (4-6-2) "Pacific" built in Juniata during July of 1917 and retired in May of 1948 after 31 years of faithful service.

Photo Caption: "The roundhouse at the Juniata Shops was the largest roundhouse in the world. This photo was taken in the early 1900s. The Pennsylvania Railroad demolished the roundhouse in 1964." Title:  Altoona RR Pictorial History, Page 39, 1996
Description:  Here is a photo that was included in the "Altoona Area Railroad Pictorial History" edited by Linda White and published in 1996 by The Altoona Mirror, page 39. Photo Caption: "M-1 locomotive sits at the northwest corner of the Erecting & Machine Shop in this photo taken in 1957." Given the purported date of this photo, my best guess at the number of this locomotive is PRR engine #6774, an M-1A (4-8-2) "Mountain" built in Juniata during November of 1930, retired in February of 1956, and here being "cannibalized" for parts. Alas....

Description:  Here is a photo that was included in the "Altoona Area Railroad Pictorial History" edited by Linda White and published in 1996 by The Altoona Mirror, page 89. Photo Caption: "This is a view of the East Altoona Yards from the 8th Street Bridge in the late 1940s." Much of the smoke in the distance emanates from the Pennsylvania Railroad's East Altoona Roundhouse, just beyond the 17th Street Bridge in Juniata. Look at all of that coal, clawed from the Earth by Western Pennsylvania's miners!
