Orange is a busy station on the Metrolink system, as it serves both the Los Angeles to Oceanside line and the San Bernardino / Riverside to Oceanside line - these routes diverge just north of the former Santa Fe station. Many passengers change from one route to the other here, and trains are frequent (about every 10 minutes) in the mornings and afternoons. Amtraks "Pacific Surfliners" also pass through, but only two trains each way stop here. Each weekday, 33 Metrolink and 24 Amtrak trains pass through, along with a pair of Union Pacific and a pair of BNSF Railway freights most days. That's 57 passenger trains per day! |

Each July, the horse racing season comes to San Diego Countys Del Mar Racetrack. And with it, increased ridership on Amtraks Surf Line, and to handle the increased crowds one train set of older cars is placed into service between Los Angeles and San Diego (in order to allow one train set of Pacific Surfliner cars to be broken up to lengthen other trains on the line). In 2011, former F40PH-turned-cab car 90230 (originally Amtrak 230), painted in the Pacific Northwests attractive Cascades scheme, traveled south to lend an assist. Northbound Amtrak Pacific Surfliner #583, running nearly forty minutes late (due, in large part, to longer station stops necessitated by the older cars), zips through the Metrolink station in Orange, California, on July 21, 2011. |

Amtrak "Pacific Surfliner" #578 rolls into the station at Orange, California, with F59PHI 457, making its inaugural run in it's new wrap markings, advising people to stay off the tracks. Ironically, while waiting for the train to arrive, I was watching five people south of the station playing on the tracks! |
