Convent freight/express station, built 1912 |
| Description: |
This 1912 Italianate style freight station is similar to the one at Morristown from 1913. It lasted until the 1950s or early 60s, into the peak days of air mail, road freight and express delivery. The Convent Station post office was located here since 1876 and was in the original wood station until 1900. The DLW Railroad then built the current station with seperate freight facility in 1912-13. The station is located on the College of Saint Elizabeth, the first women's college in New Jersey (founded 1899). Convent Station originally began as a stop to serve the Academy of St. Elizabeth in 1876. |
