Great Northern depot - Fargo, ND |
| Description: |
Built in 1906, the Romanesque style depot was designed by St Paul architec t Samuel Bartlett, a friend of James J. Hill, the founder of the Great Northern railroad. Amtrak took over the building in 1971 but eventually moved into a smaller newer building. Magic City Financial Group bought the depot in 1994 and developed it into the Great Northern Restaurant and Brewery in late 1995. II failed so in 1998 the Great Northern Restaurant and Brewery opened but then closed 6 months later. Several more restuarant tried their luck but ended closed. So I always thought it was a shame that Burlington Northern never bought GEs. The whiteface paint scheme wouldve looked great on Dash 9s or AC4400CWs. So I made this for my model railroad which has an alternate timeline of BN purchasing Canadian National instead of Santa Fe and dividing CN with Canadian Pacific, similar to how Conrail was divided by NS and CSX, but with CPR getting the lines east of Winnipeg and BN getting all the track west of Winnipeg, also inheriting CNs fleet of Dash 9s. |
