Ya know, the kind like the Q had on their diesels that said "E 5" or "SD 9". So he had to improvise. This car was following C&O 614 the day I was chasing, and is seen in Huntington near the yard. I cant really fault the guy though-for a number of years I had a New York plate, "DDA40X". Its displayed in my office nowadays. |

This one was indeed part of a roll of black and white, Kodak "Plus-X" film from December 1986. The reweigh data is blurred but may be CU 04-74, but I don't know how long a car can go between re-weighs. The car still has solid-bearing trucks, becoming increasingly rare by the mid-80's. |

This view came from the time I had obtained permission to visit the cab of Chessie System GP40-2 #4338. You may be able to see the semaphore signal's blades at the rightmost edge of the building. Dad used to work at this very signal tower (Cabin, on the C&O) and this is a reminder to me of the countless hours he spent there, doing his part to keep the railroad running smoothly. The "operator" is sitting at the middle window, with the CTC panel behind him (away from the tracks). |

My dad used to work here! DK cabin looks north towards the locomotive shops and the main line of the C&O Railway. Unlike many of C&O's cabins (their term for signal towers), this one is made of a beige brick. Most of the other ones I've seen were either red brick or wood frame in construction. Compare this view of DK Cabin with the photo of HO Cabin, a couple of miles further west. You can't see it from here but there was an upper-quadrant semaphore signal to indicate to train crews if there were train orders. This structure is still standing but it's not as easy to get to these days. |
