B&O 836045
Title:  B&O 836045
Description:  B&O 836045 has six outlet bays and not much of a paint job at this unknown date (the 6-06-1979 is frankly a guess. I don't remember when I took this picture). The consolidated (lube?) stencils area was freshly repainted. The car has the large yellow dot, which meant, according to a Chessie system trainman of the time, the car had a certain wheel diameter. I think it meant the wheels were greater than 33 inches in diameter but please correct me if I'm wrong. I haven't seen too many of these cars since that time.

B&O 528940, original photo
Title:  B&O 528940, original photo
Description:  B&O 528940, in Huntington, WV. Date unknown. This is a scan of a color print from those days, and this one has not been retouched except for cropping. This car has a mixture of schemes: large B&O "billboard" lettering, no capital dome herald, no gold stripe for (previous) unit train service, and C&O-style Demi-futura lettering with numerals on the left side. The car also has the consolidated lube panels and the dot for the wheel diameter.

C&O R-O-W marker
Title:  C&O R-O-W marker
Description:  This concrete post or marker was located on the south side of the tracks, near HO Cabin in Huntington, WV. I literally stumbled onto it while trying to find a good place to take pictures! Notice how the "C&O" lettering was pressed into, or "recessed", into the face of the concrete. I've never seen anything like this one on any other line.

C&O R-O-W marker, other side
Title:  C&O R-O-W marker, other side
Description:  This marker has R of W cast into the concrete. I don't recall if this was a separate or second marker, or if it had "C&O" on one side and "R of W" on the other. Regardless, these would be relatively easy to model, showing the limits to the right of way on your model railroad!

RS&P 1767, plug door boxcar
Title:  RS&P 1767, plug door boxcar
Description:  RS&P 1767, a plug door boxcar, was in the former C&O yard in Huntington, WV sometime in either 1979 or 1980--exact date uncertain. The car has a metal piece, displaying the logo or owner's info, attached (welded?) to four of the ribs on the left side. The low-mounted brakewheel is barely visible on the right side of this photo.

B&O 347305
Title:  B&O 347305
Description:  B&O 347305 rolls west through the ex-C&O yards in Huntington, WV in probably November 1979. I don't remember the exact date. This is probably a former C&O car due to the arched or curved ends, common to many C&O twin hoppers. The "B" is recently applied, common to many hoppers "under new management" from the mid-70's on!

C&O 3020, rear section
Title:  C&O 3020, rear section
Description:  This photo shows the fans, handrails, light, and other details of C&O 3020, a GP30 parked in the former C&O yards in Huntington, WV. Something seldom modeled is the "clean" spots on the dirty, grimy ends from train crew climbing up the grab irons, perhaps to add sand (note the "hatch" or lid for the sand container above the double-lights). Date is approximate but I took this photo the same day as the other photo of 3020.

Madison Mine #1, engineer's side view
Title:  Madison Mine #1, engineer's side view
Description:  Madison Mine, a Baldwin S-12 switcher, was in the former C&O yards at Huntington, WV in early 1980 (before March, certainly). The reason why this Baldwin was in the C&O yards is unknown to me. C&O 8248 hovers in the background. The cloudy sky obscures the stark black and white of the engine, lettering, and white stripe along the side sill.

Madison Mine #1, front and engineer's side view
Title:  Madison Mine #1, front and engineer's side view
Description:  This view of Madison Mine #1 shows the later Baldwin flat nose (compared to the rounded fronts of the VO series). I don't know if the double-beam headlight was original Baldwin or changed at a previous date. A trio of C&O diesels are about ready to couple to this unit and head east. The exact date is not certain.

Title:  Madison Mine #1, engineer's cab exterior
Description:  In the former C&O yards at Huntington, WV in early 1980, Madison Mine #1, a Baldwin S-12, is about to be coupled to C&O 8248 and two other engines. Note the white handrails or grab irons in front of the engineer's front cab window, I don't know why the cab windows were open--it was COLD that day!

Madison Mine #1, fireman's/brakeman's side
Title:  Madison Mine #1, fireman's/brakeman's side
Description:  This view of Madison Mine #1, a Baldwin S-12, shows the fireman's/brakeman's side view. Note the open doors (I don't know why they were open) and the obvious plastic wrap secured with masking tape around the exhaust stack. Someone (whimsically?) had written "C&O MARK OF EXCELLENCE" in the dirt on the side sill!

Madison Mine #1, builder's plate and bell
Title:  Madison Mine #1, builder's plate and bell
Description:  It's a little hard to read but this is the builder's plate for Madison Mine #1, a Baldwin S-12. Having zoomed in before, I figured this is Baldwin-Lima-Hamilton builder's number 76010. You can see the Baldwin circle and Lima diamond shapes. Sorry that I couldn't grab any more info, however, Dolzall and Dolzall list 76010 as the original Monongahela 419 in their book "Diesels from Eddystone (Kalmbach, 1984)" When this unit was transferred to Madison Mine #1 from the Monongahela is not known. The bell, painted black, is mounted on the frame. Sure wish I could have heard that one!

Madison Mine #1, front view
Title:  Madison Mine #1, front view
Description:  I was able to snag this front view of Madison Mine #1 while it was in the former C&O yards at Huntington, WV in early 1980. Various items visible are the headlight, closed radiator shutters, handrails (some white, some black), drop step (that looks a little high above the rails to me), coupler, pilot, other fittings, but no footboards.

Madison Mine #1, fireman's cab exterior
Title:  Madison Mine #1, fireman's cab exterior
Description:  A pair of C&O employees take a (last?) look at Madison Mine #1, a Baldwin S-12 in the former C&O yards at Huntington, WV in early 1980. Something I just noticed is what might be a rolled-up something or other above the cab windows. Any idea what that might have been?

Madison Mine #1, air tank?
Title:  Madison Mine #1, air tank?
Description:  I'm not sure but this was probably one of the air tanks for Madison Mine #1, a Baldwin S-12 in the former C&O yards at Huntington, WV in early 1980 (date is uncertain). These tanks (another one is on the other side) are between the trucks; the cab is at the rear (left).

Madison Mine #1, control stand
Title:  Madison Mine #1, control stand
Description:  This was literally a grab shot of the cab interior of Madison Mine #1, a Baldwin S-12 which was in the former C&O yards at Huntington, WV in early 1980. Full disclosure: there is a duplicate of this scan in another location on this site. The interior is painted in as best I can tell a creamy white or off-white and a reddish color similar to Frisco (TM) red on the lower section.

Madison Mine #1, in transit
Title:  Madison Mine #1, in transit
Description:  This is the last photo for this batch and it's one of the saddest, IMO. Madison Mine #1 is in transit, headed east, on the former C&O mainline in Huntington, WV in early 1980. I don't know this unit's final disposition. At any rate, when C&O was basically GE and EMD powered, a Baldwin, even as a guest, was something worth noticing!

This car still has solid bearing trucks. The damage to the car side is obvious. The car number has just about faded away.

A note on the back states "On display at the old B&O station known as Heritage Village". While at Huntington, it was preserved and renumbered as B&O 4559, in honor of a loco that used to serve the town. Ross Rowlands car
Title:  Ross Rowlands car
Description:  The ACE 3000 was Ross Rowlands brainchild. He founded American Coal Enterprises to explore the prospects for a high tech steam engine, for which he got Chessie to let him run a month of test trains with C&O 614. This car was his private car, from which he directed the action.

Classic scheme
Title:  Classic scheme
Description:  The only thing better on this blue B&O unit passing with a local is if it had the sunburst. Still, by 1985, seeing a unit in blue was a treat.
