I remember the first time
Title:  I remember the first time
Description:  that I saw this little transfer caboose go by our house at Milwaukee mp 263! They go to Winona two days a week and return coming back eastward to their own track at Tunnel City. They join the CNW "St Paul main" at Wyeville and then continue eastward on their trip back to their home terminal at Adams.

But why did they take siding?!
Title:  But why did they take siding?!
Description:  You can still see them heading westward on the siding and here comes another westbound! Since the signal is green you can figure that they took siding to let something more important go by! Something that the dispatcher did NOT want to be delayed!

And so
Title:  And so
Description:  Here comes another westbound, a Soo/ CP stack train. They were just a few minutes behind the last westbound that took siding to let them go down the main track. In this way the dispatcher is able to sort traffic, keeping a more important train from being delayed!

Be careful
Title:  Be careful
Description:  Lunar restricted proceed signal, but why?! Remember the last two westbounds? Niether one of them had this signal! The first one took siding thus clearing the main track to let the second more important train pass. I think that they are still there but a train and engine crew had better be extra careful because they did not see the things that we saw while we sat there on the back of the fire truck! This picture is called--- entering an occupied block at Bangor East commonly called Rockland! Remember that this is a speed signal and that it says absolutely nothing about the postion of the switch or the route! The switch can not change position if the signal is not red, but the signal could change! It could stay this way, or it could change to something else that is more favorable. Watch carefully as you turn the page because this is a part that I really like about these signals!

Block clear--- Diverging approach
Title:  Block clear--- Diverging approach
Description:  There is a difference between the terms block clear and Clear block which is the name of a green signal! Just because the block is clear that does not mean that the signal will be green! Remember the lunar restricted proceed signal in the last picture?! It was because of the CNW/ UP westbound that cleared the main, taking siding to let the Soo/ CP stack train pass, has now left the siding. Thus the siding is now NOT occupied by a train ahead! Thus now the local gets a more favorable indication diverging approach! Was this not very cool or what?! Somewhere in the collection of pictures, I believe that there is one of this same signal at the other end of the siding displaying red over green--- diverging clear! I would be happy to see that signal once again! Things have to be just right like the couple of times that I saw Amtk7 take siding for a BNsf coal train that did not have enough time to make "two main tracks" at Sparta West! This left the coal train "probably too heavy for the siding" stopped and sitting there on the main waiting for Amtk7 to clear the main track! It happens sometimes but NOT very often! But I'll be watching for it while I'm sitting there on the back of that fire truck, smiling because I won't have to answer for the delay!

Returning long nose first
Title:  Returning long nose first
Description:  There is no way to turn the engine at Sparta. And it also looks like there was more lumber than there was a place to put or leave it! Maybe, perhaps next trip there will be some emptys to pull and then there will be room to leave more loads.

Can I be in the picture
Title:  Can I be in the picture
Description:  They know me because I have been there before. I have talked with the crew and they know why we are there and what it is that we are doing! Because of this, they are friendly to us and so they seem not to mind being in the picture! Usually they have two engines back to back, one facing east and one facing west! I really like days like today when there is only one running like this! Great Picture?! Well I sure think so!
