CN 4705
Title:  CN 4705
Description:  A CN local parallels the Fox River Navigation Canal and River St. as it approaches the junction with the former joint MILW/SOO rails at Menasha, WI on 2 Sep. '19. Simply Incredible Foods, 198 River St., looms in the background. Simply Incredible Foods purchased the defunct Menasha Municipal Utilities (Menasha Utilities) plant in Jun. '14. I’m not sure who these rails originally belonged to, the MILW, SOO, and C&NW all had access to this small, mostly industrial island for many years. This island was formed when the Fox River Navigation Canal was excavated ca. 1856 (when the lock was completed).

Description:  A CN local approaches De Pere St. (the current street signs have been lazily bastardized to Depere St.) as it heads west via former SOO rails at Menasha, WI on 2 Sep. '19. Intertape Polymer Group (IPG), 741 4th St., stands in the background. Founded in Menasha in Dec. 1917 as George Banta Paper Co., an affiliate of the George Banta Publishing Co. They merged with Menasha’s Gebrick Paper Co. in ’19 and continued under the Banta name. The name was changed to Central Paper Products Co. (later shortened to Central Paper Co.) ca. Sep. ’20, about the same time they moved to their new location at 422 Manitowoc St., on the north side of the joint MILW/SOO railroad tracks. It’s the same facility, but the addressed changed when a portion of Manitowoc St. was vacated to allow westward expansion ca. ’76-’80. The facility was acquired by Alco Standard Corp., based in Valley Forge, PA, ca. 29 Sep. ’69, but continued to operate as Central Paper. The name changed to Central Products Co. at some point after ’74. Spinnaker Industries, Inc., purchased Central Products Co. from Alco ca. 1 Jul. ‘95. Intertape Polymer Group, Inc., from Canada, purchased Central Products from Spinnaker ca. 12 Apr. ’99.

Description:  A CN local momentarily fouls Racine St. while working in the former SOO yard at Menasha, WI on 6 Dec. '19. The small white building in the background, at 403 Racine St., was the home of Dave's Burger Shanty for many years (from at least the ‘60s to the early ‘90s). Several short-lived restaurants have occupied it since, most recently Mr. Taco/Mrs. Fajitas and Foxxy Chicken. Since May ’18 it has been the base for some food truck.

Title:  IC 9572
Description:  A CN local approaches Garfield Ave. as it works at the northwest end of the former C&NW yard on Doty Island at Menasha, WI on 21 Feb. '20. The former C&NW depot/yard office stands at left. The station sign says Neenah but it is actually located in Menasha. The border between the Twin Cities is about 750 feet to the south (right). The depot/yard office was built by the C&NW in 1965 at a cost of $15,000. St. Patrick's Catholic Church can be seen in the distance above the depot/yard office. The spire of St. Thomas Episcopal Church can be seen above the locomotive's cab.

Description:  A CN local crosses Garfield Ave. as it works the northwest end of the former C&NW yard on Doty Island at Menasha, WI on 21 Feb. '20. The former Graphic Packaging International facility, originally Marathon Corp., 160 Washington St., stands at left. The facility has been used for storage since Graphic Packaging International abandoned 228 hardworking Americans by moving production out-of-state at the end of 2016. The north end of the C&NW freight house can be seen at right. The freight house was built by the C&NW in 1965 at a cost of $400,000. The turnout and track leading into it, as well as some yard tracks, were torn out in Sep. 2013. I do not know if they use the entire building, but the southern portion is currently home to FRSTeam by Gunderson, 268 Sanford St., Menasha, WI.

Description:  A CN local crosses one of four diamonds which remain on this mostly industrial island (formed when the Fox River navigation canal was excavated) as it heads southwest via former joint MILW/SOO rails at Menasha, WI, on 30 Mar. '20. TC Transcontinental, Inc., 271 River St., an active rail customer, can be seen in the background. The site was originally home to the Menasha Printing & Carton Company, formed in 1917 through the merger of two older, neighboring companies, the Menasha Printing Co. and the Menasha Carton Co. Acquired by Marathon Paper (later Marathon Corp.) in '27, it became the Marathon Div. of American Can Co. in '57. James River Corp. acquired American Can in '82. At some point it was acquired by Bemis Co., who sold it to Exopack Holding Corp. (Sun Capital Partners, Inc.) in '10. At some point it became Coveris, until its purchase by TC Transcontinental, Inc. in '18. Looking southeast from River St. The street now jogs to the left, but it used to continue straight ahead here. At some point in the late 1990s or early 2000s, part of River St. was vacated and re-routed to facilitate expansion of this facility.

Description:  A CN local crosses Washington St. as it prepares to service Chemtrade (formerly General Chemical Corp.) via former C&NW rails on Doty Island at Menasha, WI, on 24 Jun. '20. The awesome, old building partially visible to the left is currently home to Expert Driveline Truck & Auto Repair, 216 Washington St. Built in '35 for Verbrick's Service Co., Norbert F. Verbrick, proprietor; it operated as such until '84. Designed by Henry Auler in the Tudor Revival style, it and the adjacent building at 214 Washington St. (originally offices of Northwest Electrolyte and Engraving, also designed by Auler in the Tudor Revival style) were erected on what had long been a stave yard for the Menasha Wooden Ware Co. Wayne's Towing and Service occupied this building for quite a while between the original and current occupants. Glass Nickel Pizza, 217 Washington St., purveyors of some mighty tasty pizza, can be seen to the right. I'm not sure of the previous occupants of the building. There used to be a Clark station at that address. It is difficult to imagine that then Washington Ave. was once also Hwy. 41, until that highway was relocated to what was then the rural outskirts of the Fox Cities in the 1940s.

IC 3129
Title:  IC 3129
Description:  IC 3129 works in the CN, former SOO yard at Menasha, WI, on 7 Sep. '20. The facility at right is currently home to Alliance Industries, 320 Appleton St.; they apply powder coatings and manufacture sand cores. Founded at Waupaca, WI, in 1979, they leased this facility in 2005. They later purchased the facility as well as an adjacent one. The facility was home to Menasha Mill Supply Co. from at least 1939 through the 1970s (according to tax records, this facility was built in 1966), they primarily processed waste paper. It clearly used to receive rail service, but it does not seem to currently. The former MILW yard was located on the other (south) side of it. Intertape Polymer Group (IPG), 741 4th St., is partially visible in the background, at the opposite end of the yard.

CN 9530
Title:  CN 9530
Description:  CN 9530 passes the historic, but unfortunately idled, Whiting Paper Co., 100 River St., at Menasha, WI, on 10 Sep. '20. The paper machines were shut down on 30 Mar. '16, after 134 years of providing quality paper products and living-wage jobs. Originally the Whiting and Gilbert paper mill, it was built along the Fox River Navigation Canal on the site of an abandoned dry dock in 1882 (1881). The company was a partnership of George A. Whiting and Theodore and William Gilbert. It became the George A. Whiting Paper Mills in 1886, after he bought out the Gilbert brothers. The name was changed to George A. Whiting Paper Co. in 1911. Much of the current facility was built after a devastating fire and explosion on 24 Aug. 1888. The 5th generation of the Whiting family sold the company in Mar. '14; the name was changed to Whiting Paper Co. It did not last long under the new owner. The George A. Whiting Airport, at the intersection of Airport Rd. and Appleton Rd. in Menasha, WI, was named in his honor because he donated $5,000 to construct the facility ca. the '20s. Reportedly, it was "Wisconsin’s finest and busiest airport" in the '30s. When the government decreed that there could be only 1 airmail port per county, they chose the airfield at Oshkosh, WI. The George A. Whiting Airport soon faded into history, except for the hanger, currently home to Kitz & Pfeil Ace Hardware. These rails were laid by the WC ca. 1872-4 to form a connection from the C&NW main line to the M&N, which the WC leased effective 30 Nov. '73. According to History of the Wisconsin Central, 1941, this stretch was constructed after the lease, so probably that winter or early in 1874. However, a map of Menasha dated 1872 depicts a similar connecting track, but located farther east and connecting to the C&NW bridge.

Description:  A CN local parallels Lush St. and crosses Kaukauna St. as it heads northeast via the former joint MILW/SOO rails at Menasha, WI, on 2 Oct. '20. The locomotive will momentarily foul Kaukauna St. while a crew member opens the railroad swing bridge over the Fox River Navigation Canal to permit marine traffic. This grade crossing used to include Lush St. and Chute St., but those streets have been reconfigured. The defunct Menasha Municipal Utility plant, purchased by Simply Incredible Foods in Jun. '14, dominates the horizon to the left. The former Noffke Lumber facility is partially visible to the right. It still has a spur, but the turnout for it was removed years ago.

Description:  A CN train crosses Garfield Ave. as it works the northwest end of the former C&NW yard on Doty Island at Menasha, WI, on 18 May '23. The former Graphic Packaging International facility, originally Marathon Corp., 160 Washington St., stands at left. The oldest part of the facility was built in Apr. '47 to manufacture cartons for food packaging. The land had previously been used for stave and lumber drying yards for Menasha Wooden Ware. The facility operated continuously until the end of '16, when Graphic Packaging International abandoned 228 hardworking Americans by moving production out-of-state. Now it is just another warehouse.
