WSOR 3806
Title:  WSOR 3806
Description:  The engineer carefully throttles and hits the breaks as several switch moves are made over the Park street overpass. This must be a tricky place to set out cars- the overpass is at the top of a small, relatively steep (for a railroad) hill.

Title:  WSOR 3806
Description:  The train heads to Middleton as the light of day disappears behind approaching storm clouds. Check out the gates at this crossing- They completely block traffic and will stop a car moving 35mph dead in its tracks. This is certainly an interesting way to keep cars from running the gates!

Title:  WSOR 2053

WSOR 2053
Title:  WSOR 2053
Description:  With the switching duties complete, the MABLT crew backs the 2053 towards its train. They still need to place 20 loads on the "Soo pass", a staging siding behind the Kohl Center (home of UW-Bagers basketball and hockey). After that, they'll grab their dozen WB cars and head out the Prairie sub.

WSOR 2053
Title:  WSOR 2053
Description:  The 2053 curves around the UW Heater plant tracks and is about to cross Dayton street. It was hard to hold the camera steady- the 2053 has a very loud horn, and the engineer was laying on it heavily for this crossbuck-only crossing. Out of the shot to my left and right are many UW-Madison students darting across the tracks in front of the train. They're familiar with the prospect of being slightly delayed by the switching moves here and would rather walk in front of a moving train and it's blaring horn than wait a minute or so.

Title:  WSOR 2055
Description:  It's been more than a MONTH since we've had any sunlight in southern Wisconsin, and this day was no exception. The 2055 was the power for the MABLT crew today. The majority of their 23 cars are for Lycon, which is only about a half mile away.

Title:  WSOR 3802
Description:  The MALAM crew takes 6 cars through Madison's isthmus on their way west. On most days, the AM job will be done somewhere in the neighborhood of 1600, but scanner chatter suggests that this crew will die on hours someplace west of Madison on WSOR's Prairie sub.

WSOR 2051 & 2056
Title:  WSOR 2051 & 2056
Description:  WSOR 2051 and 2056 make a light run out the Cottage Grove sub. This train (I believe it was MEX- the Madison Extra) just met the MABLT (the "bullet") at Junction A. The MABLT's power was soon to follow the MEX down the Cottage Grove sub with some switching to do at Madison Cold Storage and Royster Clark.

WSOR 2053
Title:  WSOR 2053
Description:  WSOR 2053 trundles by Olbrich Park on the Cottage Grove sub. There will be no ice skaters on the rink today- the high today was 51 degrees (F), quite tropical for this time of year in Wisconsin. The train will soon arrive at Junction A, where WSOR's Waterloo sub connects to the Cottage Grove Sub. This train, the OABLT, has some cars to pick up off of the Waterloo Sub at the junction before returning to the yard.

WSOR 2053
Title:  WSOR 2053
Description:  Having pulled a boxcar off of the Madison Central (Cold?) Storage spur, the 3-person crew makes a shove back to Royster Clark to do some switching before returning to the E. Johnson St. yard in Madison. This line used to belong to the Chicago and North Western Railway, and enters Madison from the east. It was the CNW's Milwaukee (Waukesha) to Madison mainline, but now all that remains on the Madison end is the short stub to Cottage Grove.

WSOR 2053 splits the wags
Title:  WSOR 2053 splits the wags
Description:  The MABLT crew and the 2053 lead their train around the rear leg of the wye at Thornton avenue before backing into the E. Johnson street yard in Madison. Moves on the rear leg of the wye are infrequent and unpredictable (compared to other areas), but the operating wig wags on Thornton make the capture of this move really special.

A shortie, but a goodie
Title:  A shortie, but a goodie
Description:  The "Mighty Bullet", as the crew sometimes calls it, scoots past along Campus Drive. The second track here is known as the "Long John", and it occasionally stores coal loads for a short while. The white bridge is a pedestrian-only bridge over Campus drive; the green roof belongs to UW-Madison's Stock Pavilion.

WSOR 2051
Title:  WSOR 2051
Description:  WSOR leads a 3-car MABLT today. The train is crossing Blair, Wilson, and Williamson streets in yet another odd grade crossing. The large MG&E coal burning plant looms in the background, and the white(ish) building on the left is the former C&NW Blair St. Station. When long trains snake through here, traffic comes to a standstill in this part of the isthmus.

WSOR 2051 at engineering mall
Title:  WSOR 2051 at engineering mall
Description:  As the crew backs a long cut of coal loads towards the UW Heater plant, they pass some interesting metropolitan scenery. Engineering mall (to the right) with its fountains provides interesting scenery, but the crew's undivided attention is paid to the cluster of impatient students and motorists that simply won't wait for a train to pass.

WSOR 2051
Title:  WSOR 2051
Description:  As the 2051 shoves on a long cut of coal loads, it passes by the many UW-Madison Engineering buildings. On the other side of the train is a passenger platform that used to be used to unload football fans on Saturdays. The special trains that ran from Middleton to campus stopped years ago, but the platform lives on. Hopefully its prime location will make it a stop for future passenger rail projects

Title:  WSOR 2051
Description:  After switching the mini-yard, the crew must come back west to clear the UW-Heater switch. Out of view to the right is Union South, and it's busy as a beehive today. About a minute after I took this photo, I had to stop the gentleman in the maroon beanie hat from trying to climb between coal cars as the train was temporarily stopped. Sure enough, the train started moving right after I barked at him.

Description:  With the conductor aboard again, the crew takes a light ride west to the "Long John" siding along Campus drive. This may seem like a leisurely ride, but the countless pedestrians, motorists, bicyclists and construction workers that seem to pay little heed to the trains keep the crew on their toes.

Title:  WSOR 3801
Description:  The WSOR's 3801 is the power for the MALAM (Madison Area Local- AM job) today. I first caught them in the isthmus switching the MG&E conl plant (hence the empty hoppers in the photo), but they also had some covered hoppers and newsprint boxcars that suggest that the crew might have come from the Central Soya spur. Anyway, the crew is entering thi yard from the Cottage Grove Sub wye because a couple Hi-rails are working on a switch on the main in the E. Johnson st. yard.
