A trio of UP units, including the United Way locomotive, lead a southbound UP ballast train across Monona Bay. The 3300 is a very welcome guest in Madison as the power on the UP rock trains from Rock Springs, WI usually does not change much over the summer. I can only hope that the stars and stripes return! |

UP 2963 |
| Description: |
UP 2963 leads two other 40-2s on a SB Herzog ballast train through Madison, WI. The tracks are owned by the UP, but leased to and maintained by the Wisconsin and Southern Railroad. The tracks parallel John Nolen Drive as the train is about to travel under the famous Monona Terrace. The NB lanes are a testament to how a long, slow-moving train can cause bottlenecks in Madison's isthmus during rush hour. |

If you look hard, you can still see a signal stand (inoperable) in the distance guarding the once-busy diamond that resides in the middle of Monona Bay. Now facing forward, the 3806 leads the 2054 and about 30 cars around the bend and onto the Prairie Sub. A set out at the Kohl Center siding and the UW Heater plant are less than a mile ahead. |

| Description: |
Having safely set out a cut of loads on the Kohl center siding, the crew takes about a dozen more loads to be spotted in the UW-Heater plant (out of picture at right). Interestingly enough, this is the fourth grade crossing that the train has passed since leaving the yard 2-3 miles ago that passes diagonally through the middle of an intersection. Gotta love the city planning here... |
