LAMTA 142
Title:  LAMTA 142
Description:  A Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority train rounds the curve at 1st Street and Pine Avenue in downtown Long Beach as it begins its trip to 7th Street / Metro Center near downtown Los Angeles. This is the MTAs "Blue Line," the first line built in MTAs light rail system, opening in 1990. For the most part, the "Blue Line follows the last operating Pacific Electric line - the PEs Long Beach line ceased operations in April 1961 (and I am an old enough codger that I remember riding it!).

Title:  BNSF 4470
Description:  As seen from approximately eleven stories up, BNSF train Q-LBACLO1-19K has just crossed the Cerritos Channel via the Badger Bridge as it departs Terminal Island for its trip eastward. This typically long train has BNSF ES44AC 7916 on the headend - power is distributed two in front, and two on the rear. After threading its way through the Los Angeles basin, this train (34 rail cars, 280 containers [26 20’, 243 40’, 11 45’] for 8085 feet [including power] and 6588 tons) will be speeding across the southwestern desert within a few hours. PHL 65
Title:  PHL 65
Description:  Departing Terminal Island, Pacific Harbor Line MP20C-3 65 approaches the lift span of the Badger Bridge over the Cerritos Channel in Long Beach, California, on September 19, 2011. This vertical lift bridge was constructed in 1996 by Adams & Smith Incorporated, replacing another lift bridge built in 1924 connecting Terminal Island (formerly Rattlesnake Island) to the rest of the country. This bridge has a vertical clearance ranging from 6.7 feet (bridge down) to 165 feet (bridge up). [Photographed from railroad property with permission.]

PHL 80
Title:  PHL 80
Description:  One of the Pacific Harbor Lines two 3GS21C genset locomotives brings a cut of baretables (empty well cars) northward (railroad "east") across the Badger Bridge and off of Terminal Island. With all the containers moving by rail and by highway in the Ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles, as well as various marine vessels, this lift bridge and the adjacent Ford lift bridge (for highway traffic) are a busy place, as the spans are lifted and lowered with great regularity, holding up highway traffic and, at times, rail traffic. While owned and operated by PHL, these tracks also see a steady flow of BNSF Railway and Union Pacific trains as well. [Photo taken on railroad property with permission.]

Description:  After the passage of tug boat "Arapaho" in the Cerritos Channel, the Pacific Harbor Lines Badger Bridge is slowly lowered back into place to allow BNSF Railway train S-ALTSCO1-16V (with BNSF 7920, 7577 and 7697 for power), which is patiently waiting to cross, to complete its journey from Alliance, Texas to Terminal Island - on the far side of this span. This vertical lift bridge was constructed in 1996 by Adams & Smith Incorporated, replacing another lift bridge built in 1924 connecting Terminal Island (formerly Rattlesnake Island) to the rest of the country.
