Description:  GREX 6007 SPS® (Self-Powered SlotMachine®) in the CN, former SOO, yard off N. Linwood Ave. at W. College Ave. at Appleton Junction, WI on 13 May '17. The SlotMachine® work platform, GREX 60540, consists of several gondolas permanently connected with articulated couplings. There are no bulkheads between the cars, so an excavator can traverse the entire length of the train’s floor to load or unload material. This small yard used to serve as an interchange for the SOO and Chicago & North Western (C&NW). Later it served as an intermodal yard for the WC.

Title:  CNW Swing Bridge
Description:  A more recent look at the old Chicago and Northwestern swing bridge across the navigation canal on the east end of the "flats" of Appleton along the Fox River. The bridge still looks as interesting as ever. It's a shame the track in the flats has been almost completely removed, a sign of the manufacturing facilities closing.

Former Chicago and Northwestern Swing Bridge

Description:  Looking back down the branch line toward Appleton Junction from the Newberry Trail. A look at the top of the trees on the right shows the smokestack for Neenah Paper, the last business with a railroad spur. They get boxcars spotted at the mill. They have a second track that once received tank cars, but have not used that spot for at least a decade.

Plate Girder Deck Bridge to Former Consolidated Paper Mill
Title:  Plate Girder Deck Bridge to Former Consolidated Paper Mill
Description:  A look at a hormer CNW bridge that was once used to serve the Consolidated Paper Company's Interlake Division. The site was located where John Street once crossed the Fox River and the Number 0 Dam is situated. The John Street bridge was removed in the late 1950's and was replaced by the College Avenue bridge, which soars 75' above the water. The paper mill in question uas originally named Manufacturing and Investment Company which was a pulp and paper mill started up in 1891. It took the place of a strawboard mill built by Richmond Brothers in :857. By 1901, the Manufacturing and Investment Company became Interlake Pulp and Paper Company. Interlake was then purchased by Consolidated Paper in 1916. It remained a part of Consolidated Paper as it's Interlake Division Appleton mill until its closure on 19 November 1982. Magcobar North America, part of Dresser Industries Inc. started to lease a small portion of the facility in December 1982. They used part of the closed paper mill's facility to process drilling fluids. Dresser was still using the facility in 1993, but has ceased production there in at least the last decade. The mill site has mostly been razed and redeveloped into trendy shops, boutiques and townhouses. This bridge is located off the line that runs to Kimberly and Combined Locks, branching off that line a few hundred feet after crossing the navigation canal swing bridge. The swing bridge is still used and is visible to the rear of the plate girder bridge. The bridge crosses from the south east river bank onto an "island" formed by the mill race (forefront water) and the navigation canal, which has a lock located at the mill site. Beyond that, is the Number 3 Dam. the rails have been removed and there is hope of incorporating this bridge and a few others in the "Flats" into recreational trails.

Train was headed back to Neenah after servicing Appleton, Little Chute and Kaukauna. Where this solitary track is, there were once seven. The C&NW freight house used to stand on the other side of the tracks. As you can see, I was zoomed in one increment too far.

It is actually two bridges side-by-side, the former MILW bridge is the nearest of the 2, its rails were pulled years ago. Train was headed for Kimberly and Combined Locks. The Atlas Paper Co. mill, 425 W. Water St., is on the left. Completed in 1878 and expanded over the years, it eventually became part of the Kimberly-Clark Corp. (K-C). The mill ceased operation ca. 1999, the year K-C donated it to the Paper Industry International Hall of Fame. After some of the additions were razed, the Hall of Fame opened its new home and its interactive museum, the Paper Discovery Center, on 26 Feb. ’05.

CN 9473
Title:  CN 9473
Description:  CN local approaches N. Lynndale Dr. as it heads southeast via former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI on 15 Oct. '17. I believe they just picked up an empty centerbeam flatcar from Wisconsin Building Supply. This is the branch that runs to New London, WI, but I'm not sure if the local ran all the way to New London or not. It used to be a main line which ran to Clintonville, where it split to continue northwestward to Eland and points beyond, or continue northeastward to Shawano and points beyond. W. College Ave. crosses the tracks near the center of the scene.

CN 4721 and CN 9473
Title:  CN 4721 and CN 9473
Description:  CN local emerges from behind All About Packaging, Inc., Warehouse #2, 1325 S. Perkins St., and approaches S. Perkins St. as it heads northeast through the former C&NW yard at Appleton Junction, WI on 14 Dec. '17. Train was preparing to drop off a cut of cars before continuing on to Little Chute and Kaukauna. There is a spur along the south side of the building, the wheel stops are partially hidden in the snow, but the turnout for the spur was removed years ago. The oldest part of the building was completed in Mar. '60, the new facility for the Fox Valley Sheltered Workshop. Inc. (started in '55 to created employment opportunities for the disabled). It became Valley Packaging Industries Inc. ca. mid- or late-'80s. After they moved to a new facility, this one has been home to Valley Planing Mill, Inc., followed by Perfect Patterns, Inc. It is currently a warehouse for All About Packaging, Inc., whose main facility is a couple of blocks away at 2200 W. Everett St. Founded at Appleton, WI in '96, they specialize in thermoformed packaging.

GTW 5836 and GTW 4907
Title:  GTW 5836 and GTW 4907
Description:  A CN local crosses the W. Lawrence St. grade crossing and passes the recently closed S. Locust St. grade crossing as it heads northeast via former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI on 29 Dec. '17. Train was headed for Little Chute and Kaukauna. The S. Locust St. grade crossing was closed as part of Appleton's quest for so-called quiet zone status. The "Do Not Enter" signs (there is one on the far side of the tracks as well) were put up in an attempt to discourage distracted drivers from trying to drive down the railroad tracks.

CN 9455 and IC 3138
Title:  CN 9455 and IC 3138
Description:  A CN local crosses S. Story St. as it heads northeast via former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI on 18 Jan. '18. Local was headed for Little Chute and Kaukauna. The train would have been hidden behind the historic Pierce Manufacturing plant that occupied this city block from 1917 until it was razed in 2011. This plot of land has been divided into lots for Habitat for Humanity and some homes have sprung up to partially obscure the view.

Peculiar
Title:  Peculiar
Description:  A cut of cars spotted in a very peculiar location, the CN track which once enabled interchange traffic between the former C&NW yard (behind me) and the former SOO yard (in the distance) at Appleton Junction, WI on 24 Feb. '18. I had to photograph this scene just because it is one of those instances of railroad operations which leaves me scratching my head. There are 3-4 loaded TPPX woodchip gondolas at the far end of the cut of cars. Those cars are almost never dropped off at the Appleton yard. The train originates in Neenah, stops in Appleton to drop of some cars, and continues on to work Little Chute and Kaukauna. Once-in-a-great-while they will leave a couple of TPPX cars in the Appleton yard for some strange reason, but leaving them here makes no sense at all (at least not to a casual observer like me).

IC 3138
Title:  IC 3138
Description:  CN local momentarily fouls S. Whitman Ave. as it services Quality Carriers, just out-of-frame to the right, at the northwest corner of the wye at the former C&NW yard at Appleton Junction, WI on 3 Mar. '18. An old caboose is partially visible background left. It is painted as RI 17177. Some references claim it was not their caboose, but MILW. The Foremost facility is partially visible background right. They have a spur, but it has not been used for quite a while.

Earthkote International, Inc. is one previous occupant and there is a small Miller Electric sign on the southwest wall. Train was headed for Little Chute and Kaukauna and had two locomotives, GTW 6226 and CN 9530.
