CN 5641 and CN 2136 |
| Description: |
CN through freight emerges from behind the historic Tuttle Press Co. factory and approaches N. Lawe St. as it heads northeast via former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI on 1 Jul. ’14. Train was headed from Stevens Point to Green Bay and had two locomotives, CN 5641 pulling and CN 2136 pushing. The factory dates to 1905, it later operated as Artfaire and finally as Sulpaco West, Inc. For nearly a century this facility produced a variety of renowned specialty papers: napkins, table covers, tissue, craft paper, paper dolls, gift boxes, crepe paper, and especially gift wrapping paper, until Sullivan Paper Co. shuttered this plant on 27 Jun. ’02 and moved production to one of its other facilities in Mass. Since then it appears to have been used as storage for one or more local businesses. The spur used to serve Tuttle Press, Luvata (formerly Valley Cast), and Appvion (originally Appleton Papers), only the latter is a current rail customer. |

The mill ceased operation ca. 1999, the year Kimberly-Clark donated it to the Paper Industry International Hall of Fame. The Hall of Fame opened its new home as well as its interactive museum, the Paper Discovery Center, 26 Feb. ’05. |

A CN local approaches the former C&NW swing bridge over the Fox River Navigation Canal at Lock No. 3 (out of frame to right) as it hauls 37 cars westward vhrough 'The Flats' at Appleton, WI, on 4 Aug. '14. Train had just descended the grade from Telulah Park on its way back to the yard at Appleton Junction after servicing Kimberly and Combined Locks. This view was captured from the abandoned former C&NW fixed bridge over the Fox River. The active line was originally laid by the MLS&W. I used to think that the abandoned bridge was former MILW, but I have since learned that it was C&NW. Over the past several years, I have noticed that some misinformed individuals erroneously refer to ‘The Alats’ as ‘Oneida Flats,’ or some other variation. For all of my life, the historic, industrial heart of Appleton has been simply ‘The Flats.’ However, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries it was referred to as 'The Water Power.' |

Industry Along the CNW Line |
| Description: |
Heading out of the former CNW Appleton yard, the CN now, first encounters this area about a mile toward the east. The tan building with the blanked windows was Appleton Wire. Appleton Wire made the woven screen belts upon which paper is made. They had their own wire plant across Lawe Street in the white and tan building just behind the crossing signals. Appleton Wire sold off the wire mill in the late 1970's as most belts/fabrics for paper making shifted to being made with monofilament rather than metal. While Appleton Wire is closed, the wire mill is still going and even has a second plant on the Kimberly Subdivision. The wire mill has changed hands and names quite often over the years but is relatively known as Valley Cast. The red building is the Appleton Paper (Appvion) mill in Appleton. This paper mill is still going strong, a close look at their siding shows some railcars spotted. |

Valley Cast |
| Description: |
This factory originally made wire for Appleton Wire to weave into large, fine mesh belts upon which paper is made. With the paper industry switching to using mainly monofilament belts in the 1970's, Appleton Wire sold this off and it became Valley Cast. It has changed ownership and names numerous times, but has been Valley Cast more than once. That is the name most people know it as. Valley Cast has a second plant along the rails of the Kimberly Subdivision, in Kimberly. This plant in Appleton once had two railroad spurs. One of the spurs ran into the middle of the facility through the gate on the right side of the photo. The other spur ran along the north side of the building, to the left. Valley Cast received many different types of metals for the alloys that were made in the foundry and drawn into wire. I know of boxcars full of shell casings from the military, copper plate and even foreign coins to be melted down. The spurs to this plant are torn out since the 1990's. |

Valley Cast |
| Description: |
This shows where the rails went along the north side of Valley Cast. The rails can be seen on the ground behind the line pole, in front of the gas tank. Appleton Paper (Appvion) and the rails serving it can also be seen. This spur also served what was I. Bachalls Steel. This steel service center has become Russel Metals Bahcall Group. |

The Appleton "Flats" Center of Industry, 2014 |
| Description: |
This is all that is left that even closely resembles the plethora of tracks that blanketed the "Flats" serving numerous businesses in the not too distant past. Only one industry, Neenah Paper remains down in this Fox River bottom area. neenah paper may be expanding in this location, if all things pass by the city governing bodies. Good news for an industry that has taken big set backs in this area since 2008. The view is looking generally west from Lawe Street. The Oneida "Skyline" Bridge is what crosses over the tracks, and river. |

CNIS 413535 |
| Description: |
Two boxcars spotted at Neenah Paper in the once thriving Appleton "flats" industrial area. The "flats" was once full of industry and the manufacturing jobs it supplied. Most of the area is now being redeveloped into apartments and condos. The jobs are gone. This spur has the last remaining car spots in existence in the "flats'. The only remaining track left besides this spur is the mainline of the Kimberly Subdivision, which runs through the "flats" to reach Kimberly and Combined Locks. Neenah Paper's spur has spots for two boxcars and another spot for either a tank or covered hopper supplying chemicals. The spot for the chemical car has not been used for a very long time. |

Entry to Appleton Across the Fox River |
| Description: |
The Milwaukee Road entered Appleton via a bridge across the Fox River to the industrial "flats" within the confines of the river valley. The line came from Menasha, which was connected to the secondary main between Milwaukee and Green Bay at Hilbert. The bridge piers are all gone, but this abutment remains on the south side of the river. The concrete structure on the left is a pier for the Memorial Drive traffic bridge, which the railroad bridge went under. |

Running to spot one car at one of the local customers from the former CNW yard in Appleton. The train is about to cross the intersection of W. North Street/ W. Packard Street and N. Appeton Street. The green space, Packard Place, may have been the location of a grain elevator. I know there was one in the vicinity, but I cannot remember exactly where. |

The CN local for Kimberly and Little Chute crorses Lawe Street and heads for the former C&NW swing bridge across the navigation canal. The trailing point turnout going off to the left rear of the train serves Neenah Paser. Neenah Paper is the only remaining customer for the railroad in this once heavy industrial area. After crossing the swing bridge, the train will be climbing out of the "Flats" and head for Kimberly. |
