This was shot from the Melrose Avenue overpass at the north end of Radnor Yard and its clear that everyone is paying attention to the job. Number 2258 is in charge of a train of three flatcars. The one in the middle is loaded with worn brake shoes picked up earlier from various points in the yard. The flatcars at either end are loaded with new brake shoes and have chutes attached to the sides. The gentlemen on the end flatcars will toss new shoes into the chutes where they will be deposited near the rails. Car knockers will use the new shoes to replace worn shoes on arriving and departing freight cars. I THINK that the two end flatcars were loaded with different types of brake shoes, either composite or cast steel. |

Number 4529 was built in December 1964 as ACL SD35 1007 (c/n 29597) on EMD Order 7752, was renumbered to SCL 1907, then L&N 7027, then L&N 1281, then L&N 4529, then SBD 4529, then CSXT 4529. It was a smoggy day to be sure, and all these diesel locomotives at or near Idle were not helping, except for the 3rd far left track, which held a bunch of out-of-service locomotives, behind the three in-service locomotives on Track 4. I wasn't sure where I was in Nashville, I was there on a business trip and snapped a couple of photos on my way back to the airport. Thanks to Reed Reding (see Comment below) we now know this was shot from the Melrose Avenue overpass at the north end of Radnor Yard. |

Apparently the L&N opted for the sheet metal (no dynamic brake) option. I understand that the GP30 is generally reported as designed by GM's automotive group. I'm no designer, but I wonder if they moved the crease in the dynamic brake section up to match the cab roofline, and put the lower intake grill at an angle to match the lower crease, what this design would look like? |

L&N GP35 1109 at Nashville, Tennessee on September 29, 1982, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. There is the ghost of the ampersand in the paint on the hood, suggesting that this locomotive had been repainted in the same scheme . I'll have to look at the slide again. |
