Description:  Eighteen months after coming through Anaheim on the Santa Fe as part of a very public Operation Life Saver special, a repainted and dirty SP 3201 sits in the Espee yard waiting to return to West Colton. Its day of red and yellow, and high end passenger assignments are over. All that's left is to finish out its days hauling freight. But it did get to keep one reminder from those former glory days, the still yellow painted big hole light.

Description:  Southern Pacific SD45T-2 6809, seen here in the company of SD9s and GP9s in Anaheim, California, on January 30th, 1989, rolled out of EMDs factory in Illinois in February 1972 as SP 9167. It was upgraded at SPs Sacramento Shops in May 1987, at which point it was renumbered. Along with the mechanical upgrading, these units also lost their distinctive SP oscillating lights and received, in anticipation of the merger with the Santa Fe, rooftop beacons (although by the time most of these T-2s were upgraded, the ICC had already denied the SPSF merger).

Description:  On July 4th, 1989, Santa Fe Railway unveiled a pair of FP45s in the resurrected red and silver Warbonnet scheme, dubbed the Superfleet scheme. These were repainted after the railroad restored the California Railroad Museum’s F7A and B units into Warbonnet colors for a public relations film, and the road’s executives realized what a valuable scheme it was. So valuable, in fact, that the new Superfleet scheme was painted on all new power delivered with wide noses, beginning with the GP60Ms. The first two GP60Ms arrived in Los Angeles on May 22, 1990 and, coincidently, that same day a passenger special behind a pair of FP45s (91 and 90) operated on the railroad’s Surf Line. The train, carrying officials of the Southern California Regional Rail Authority were touring the various lines on which they hoped to begin Metrolink commuter train service, is seen here passing through the Amtrak station in Anaheim, California.
