Prominet here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #435, a D-11A (4-4-0) "American" built in the Altoona Machine Shops in June of 1885 and retired in May of 1913 after 28 years of service. It's pulling the photographer's train that's parked on the stone-arched Conemaugh River Bridge ~ the very same Bridge which damned-up the surging waters during the "Johnstown Flood" on 31 May 1889. Photo Caption: "Conemaugh Aftermath. Devastating Johnstown Flood [of 31 May 1889] swept away PRR spans above the Steel City. This is the stone arch bridge which replaced them. The Conemaugh and its banks were still cluttered with debris ~ including rails, ties, and telegraph poles ~ when official photographer Jennings took the picture."

Description:  Here is page two of a six-page article entitled "100 Years Ago: The Johnstown Flood And The Pennsylvania Railroad." It was published originally in the "National Railway Bulletin," Volume 54, Number 5, 1989, page 13. Photo Caption: "R-class Consolidation No. 1309 appears to have fared well during the flood, with only a pile of debris heaped against its front end. The five-month-old engine remained in service for many more years, finally being scrapped in 1915." Shown here is PRR engine #1309, an "R" Class (2-8-0) "Consolidation" built in the Altoona Machine Shops during January of 1889 and retired in June of 1915 after 26 years of faithful service.
