PRR 8564, ES-15M 1964
Description:
Wye Switches. Here is an original photo that I took of a Pennsylvania Railroad train at the Wye Switches in Duncansville, Pennsylvania, on 5 October 1964. Shown here is PRR engine #8564, an ES-15M built by EMD in 1953 and rated at 1,500 horsepower. It is pulling a 34-car freight train from the Altoona Yards to the Hollidaysburg Yards. The caboose is #477632. The fireman has just received train orders from the man at WYE Tower, not shown at right. When the end of the train and the caboose reach this point, the conductor also receives orders by the same means.

PRR 8619, AS-18M, 1965
Description:
WYE Tower. Here is an original photo that I took of a Pennsylvania Railroad train at the Wye Switches in Duncansville, Pennsylvania, on 21 May 1965. Shown here is PRR engine #8619, an AS-18M built by American Locomotive Company in August of 1956 and rated at 1,800 horsepower. It's pulling a mixed-cargo freight train that is still crossing US Route 22 on its way from Altoona to Hollidaysburg. That's WYE Tower on the right. The pipe coming from the Tower to the switch on the left indicate that the switch was opened and closed via compressed air. Duncansville's Third Street is in the photo's center.

PRR, WYE Tower, 1965
Description:
Wye Switches. Here is an original photo that I took of Pennsylvania Railroad property at the Wye Switches in Duncansville, Pennsylvania, on 21 May 1965. Shown here is the railhead facing East, toward WYE Tower and Hollidaysburg. Note the multi-track signal bridge in the distance, near where a train wreck on 06 November 1916 occurred. From 1834 until 1854, this was the right-of-way for the Allegheny Portage Railroad. And from 1850 until 1854, this location was known as "New Portage Junction" since it was the eastern junction of the New Portage Railroad and the Pennsylvania Railroad (coming from Altoona to the left).

WYE Tower. Here is an original photo that I took of Pennsylvania Railroad property at the Wye Switches in Duncansville, Pennsylvania, on 21 May 1965. Shown here is the railhead facing West, toward Duncansville and the Allegheny Mountains in the hazy distance. Note the two signals (one high, one low), both of which are in "stop" mode. From 1834 until 1854, this was the right-of-way for the Allegheny Portage Railroad. And from 1850 until 1854, this location was known as "New Portage Junction" since it was the eastern junction of the New Portage Railroad and the Pennsylvania Railroad (coming from Altoona to the right).

PRR 8618, AS-18M, 1965
Description:
WYE Tower. Here is an original photo that I took of a Pennsylvania Railroad train at the Wye Switches in Duncansville, Pennsylvania, on 21 May 1965. Shown here is PRR engine #8618, an AS-18M built by American Locomotive Company during August of 1956 and rated at 1,800 horsepower. It's pulling a mixed-cargo freight train that is still crossing US Route 22 on its way from Hollidaysburg to Altoona. This train will travel on what was the PRR's original main line from Altoona to its connection with the New Portage Railroad from 1850 until 1854. After the Horseshoe Curve was completed and the present main line was opened in 1854, the PRR bought the Pennsylvania Canal-New Portage Railroad package from the State ~ but then abandoned both of them in 1857!

Once upon a time, there were four sets of tracks at this point ~ as evidenced by the wide signal bridge. This is also where an eastbound freight train that had lost its brakes coming down the New Portage Branch Line crashed into several waiting locomotives on Sunday, 06 November 1916.

Description:
Doghouse. Here is an original photo that I took of Pennsylvania Railroad rolling stock just East of WYE Tower in Duncansville, Pennsylvania, during March of 1966. Shown here is the builder's plate on the first tender. This is a Model 90-F-82 steam locomotive tender. The "4519" indicates that it was attached to PRR I-1SA "Decapod" (2-10-0) locomotive #4519. Mr. Roger RadbillI suggests (in a personal communication) that "this most likely is the original tender from PRR 4519 1923 Baldwin Locomotive Works I1s c/n 56798 rebuilt to I1sa 4/43 and scrapped or sold 10/59."

Doghouse. Here is an original photo that I took of Pennsylvania Railroad rolling stock just East of WYE Tower in Duncansville, Pennsylvania, during March of 1966. Shown here is a closer view of the "Doghouse" on the second tender. The structure itself is made of metal and originally there was glass in the windows. The low-lying structures on both sides of the deck could be flipped open so that water could be poured into the tender's reservoir. The round thing on the right was a headlight so that the locomotive's crew could see in the dark while running backwards. Also visible are the signal bridge on the left and the Vipond Mansion on the right across US Route 22.

PRR Hopper Car #191117 may have been a 70-ton capacity H-21A, built at the Altoona Car Shops around 1916. It was in line to be scrapped, too. Also visible is the clock tower of the Blair County Court House in Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania.

PRR 4519, I-1SA Tender, 1966
Description:
Doghouse. Here is an original photo that I took of Pennsylvania Railroad rolling stock just East of WYE Tower in Duncansville, Pennsylvania, during March of 1966. Shown here is the coal-bin of the first tender, as seen from the coal-bin of the second tender. This is what the locomotive engineer and fireman would see: Dutch doors on the coal-bin itself, and a channel in the floor for the coal to feed into the mechanical stoker. Until Federal rules were published in 1923, most steam locomotives were hand fired ~ up to 5,000 pounds of coal per hour!

PRR WYE Tower, 1966
Description:
WB. Here is an image of a photo by John M. Prophet that was taken in Duncansville, Pennsylvania, on 23 September 1966. Shown here is the Pennsylvania Railroad's WYE Tower. Local folk call this place the "Wye Switches" because it features an actual railroad wye with three switches ~ but there's lots of local history here, too. From 1834 until 1854, this was the right-of-way for the Allegheny Portage Railroad between Hollidaysburg and Johnstown. And from 1850 until 1854, this location was known as "New Portage Junction" as it was the eastern junction of the Allegheny Portage Railroad and the Pennsylvania Railroad's mainline from Altoona. Here is page 68 of a 96-page monograph entitled "Power To Burn: Smoke, Steam, & Cinders" that was edited by James M. Shafer and published during 1976. Photo Caption: "A PRR wreck at New Portage Junction near Wye Switches, Duncansville, involved seven locomotives. This was the first wreck in which automobiles, en route to dealers, were destroyed. It occurred Nov. 6, 1916." In an article published in a November 1966 issue of the "Altoona Mirror," it's stated that "It was 50 years ago, Nov. 6, 1916, that [this] disastrous freight wreck occurred near the Wye Switches at Duncansville. An eastbound freight train, No. 2736, went out of control descending the New Portage Branch from Gallitzin to Hollidaysburg and ran away to crash into four engines ~ Nos. 2477, 2759, 2665, and 971 ~ standing near the Wye Switches. Seven trainmen were killed in the wreck." Note the steam-powered derrick at work on the right.
