ACN. Here is a brief history of the Altoona, Clearfield, & Northern Railroad ~ the "Wopsy Railroad" ~ that was published in the 13 June 1974 issue of the "Altoona Mirror." This 4.3 mile-long, narrow-gauge railroad operated from 1891 through 1920 ~ a span of some 29 years. (Not from the William E. Burket Collection.)

ACN Juniata Terminal, 1903
Description:
ACN. Here is a detail from an official Pennsylvania Railroad photo that was taken in Altoona, Pennsylvania, in February of 1903. Prominent here is the Juniata Terminal of the narrow-gauge Altoona, Clearfield, & Northern Railroad ~ the "Wopsy Railroad." It's located at Chestnut Avenue and 2nd Street, almost directly across the street from the Pennsylvania Railroad's Juniata Shops and the 2nd Street Gate. Note the Altoona & Logan Valley Electric Railway's double-tracked right-of-way paralleling Chestnut Avenue ~ Juniata to the left, Altoona to the right. In the foreground are the headwaters of the Little Juniata River; they tunnel under the Shops and the Yards on their way to Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. William E. Burket Collection.

ACN. Here is a postal card entitled "Juniata Shops, Pennsylvania R.R., Altoona, Pa." Postmarked: 27 June 1913. The white structure at the left-center is the Juniata Terminal of the narrow-gauge Altoona, Clearfield, & Northern Railroad ~ the "Wopsy Railroad." It's located at Chestnut Avenue and 2nd Street, adjacent to the Altoona & Logan Valley Electric Railway's double-tracked right-of-way paralleling the Avenue. Brush Mountain dominates the distance. ACN, "Ready For A Mountain Trip," 1974
Description:
ACN. Here is a photo of the Altoona, Clearfield, & Northern Railroad ~ the "Wopsy Railroad" ~ that was published in the 13 June 1974 issue of the "Altoona Mirror." Photo Caption: "Ready for a mountain trip was this Baldwin 2-6-0 narrow gauge locomotive of the Allegheny Northern Railroad. The train, with its summer-type wooden cars, is shown standing at the station, at what is now Broadway and Fourth Avenue in Juniata, about 1904. The trip was 4.3 miles to Wopsonnock Mountain, with a maximum speed of 8 to 12 miles an hour. The road ceased operations in 1920." (Not from the William E. Burket Collection.)
