CN through freight slowly pulls out past a CN local on former SOO rails at N. Lake St. in Neenah, WI on 15 Feb. '14. Through freight was likely enroute from Stevens Point to Green Bay and had two locomotives, IC 3133 pulling and CN 9673 pushing. Local was likely bound for Appleton and points beyond. A couple of miles away at Stroebe, another local was waiting to return to the former SOO yard in Neenah.

Description:
CN local bisects the intersection of W. College Ave./Hwy. 125 and S. Memorial Dr./N. Richmond St./Hwy. 47 as it heads northeast over former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI on 15 Feb. '14. This is probably the busiest intersection, and consequently busiest grade crossing, in Appleton. The large brick building in background is Good Company restaurant, est. 1980. The building was formerly Marshall Brothers Wholesale Paper, a.k.a. Marshall Paper Co., est. 1893. It used to receive rail service, the spur was on the opposite, north side, of the building.

CN local shoves a string of cars along former C&NW rails to service Warehouse Specialists, Inc. (the tan building partially visible on the left) and Imerys USA, Inc. (the blue, truncated, triangular shape partially visible behind the tree line, background left) in Combined Locks, WI on 18 Feb. '14 (Imerys is just across the border in Kimberly). The tracks are quite sinuous here; they run on the south bank of the Fox River. I didn't notice the Bald Eagle until I was reviewing the photos.

CN local passes L. C. Siding enroute to service Appleton Coated paper mill via former C&NW rails in Combined Locks, WI on 18 Feb. '14. I have long thought the station sign is wrong, but I haven’t found definitive proof yet. I presume that L. C. is short for Little Chute, which is on the opposite side of the river. Seems like the sign should be C. L. Siding, for Combined Locks. Does anyone have an old C&NW timetable handy?

It is actually two bridges side-by-side, the former MILW is on the left, unfortunately its rails were pulled up years ago. Train was headed back to the yard after servicing Kimberly and Combined Locks. The former Atlas Paper Co. mill is on the left, it was completed in 1878.

Usually all 3 members of the crew ride in cab of the lead locomotive, but occasionally, like today, one of them rides in the trailing locomotive. Maybe he wants a little more room to stretch out once in a while.

SOO 736, GTW 5856, and IC 9602
Description:
CN local passes SOO 736 as the former hauls 23 cars through Telulah Park via former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI on 11 Mar. ’14. Local was headed back to the former C&NW yard at Appleton Junction after servicing industries in Combined Locks, Kimberly, and Appleton. SOO 736 was donated to the City by John Mason Balliet. He also paid for construction of a temporary spur off the main line to get the locomotive into the park, as well as a fence erected later to deter vandals. The locomotive arrived on 14 Nov. '59. He served as a director for Missouri Pacific, Michigan Central, Lake Erie & Eastern, and Pittsburgh & Lake Erie railroads.

CN local had to lay on the horn heavier than usual because the people in the little, dark gray car were just dying to visit Telulah Park at Appleton, WI on 11 Mar. ’14. The locomotive is less than 140 feet from grade crossing at the park’s entrance. Train was hauling 23 cars through the park via former C&NW rails and was returning to the former C&NW yard at Appleton Junction after servicing industries in Combined Locks, Kimberly, and Appleton.

A CN local approaches Hwy. O as it heads south with five cars via former SOO rails at Mackville Station, Town of Center, Outagamie Co., WI on 15 Mar. ’14. Listed as Mackville Station on some old maps, distinguishing it from the community of Mackville which is 1-mile due east of here, it is listed as Mackville on some time tables. Some remnants of the depot’s foundation are protruding from the snow to the right of the base of the station sign. The station sign was stolen between 13 Jun. and 9 Jul. ’14, not long after I posted a photograph of it on this site. I presume it was stolen; I would think if the railroad had removed the sign they would have removed the posts as well. Both posts stood barren for quite a while. One of the posts still stands next to the track (as of Oct. '18), the other lies on the ground. Part of the passing siding still exists at right, it has been truncated at Hwy. O. What remains forms a spur which could be used to service Stainless Tubular Products (STP) (out-of-frame to the right). Train was headed back to Neenah after working Shawano.

Unbeknownst to me, a CN local was sneaking up, heading the opposite direction, along the former SOO rails parallel to, west of, this train.

Normally the local could have waited on the C&NW passing siding, but a long string of cars had been spotted there for several days (that string of cars is visible curving to the left in the background). Local was headed for Appleton, Little Chute, and Kaukauna.
