Description:  A pair of switchers work through a cut of cars at Clyde Yard. Also of note are the SP open auto rack, which were common in those days, and the Burlington box car at far right, looking pretty good 8 years after the merger.

Westbound on the racetrack
Title:  Westbound on the racetrack
Description:  In August 1982, my friend Dan Heller moved from Long Island to Phoenix. I went along for the ride. We passed through Chicago(Yankees playing the White Sox), leaving the next morning. We caught this westbound at Cicero, but not far enough ahead of it to get on the sun side. We took the straight on shot, framing the train under the classic Q signal bridge.

Description:  The big thing in the early 80s was the hordes of SD 40-2s that were being acquired by just about all the Class 1s, and BN was no exception, especially since they were just on the brink of an explosion of coal traffic out of Wyoming. Here are two of the new units. Note the Frisco box at right.

Surrounded
Title:  Surrounded
Description:  This local was working at Olathe on the ex Frisco. There were sidings that were facing point in both directions. To access them, the power would work with cars on both ends, with crewmen flagging moves. It was unconventional, and probably inconvenient, but it eliminated a lot or run around moves in CTC territory. It looked like one of those ancient "make do" situations that would probably get everyone fired now.

Title:  Fuel tender
Description:  BN, and subsequently, BNSF, have tried fuel tenders at various times. BNs effort in the 80s was to extend the distances between fueling stops, and modified several tanks so they could fuel while en route. One of the tender sets is pulling this 66 car eastbound through Hoffman Av as it starts down the river toward La Crosse. As an added bonus, the leader is one of the BN tiger stripe units. The power is otherwise notable in that the two GP 50's and cabless B30-7A represent common road power in the era before 6 axle units took over everything.

Pair of switchers
Title:  Pair of switchers
Description:  BN used end cab switchers all over the system, so it was not a surprise to see these two pulling a 48 car transfer through Hoffman Av en route to Pigs Eye. We see the action from atop Dayton's Bluff, at Indian Mounds Park. It's a great place to watch and shoot the action in the morning.

A and a B
Title:  A and a B
Description:  This was a fairly common combination on BN at the time, since they had the 120 B30-7A cabless units. This set approaches Hoffman Av as it heads down river with 74 cars.
