ARR 3004
Title:  ARR 3004
Description:  While waiting for a southbound coal train (which I never did see), I caught this work train working its way back to Anchorage at restricted speed. This is the first rail-related photo I took since moving to Alaska!

ARR 4002
Title:  ARR 4002
Description:  An export coal train bound for Seward leaves the yard in Anchorage as seen from the northern end of the Tony Knowles Trail. Friday evening rush hour traffic and an unfamiliarity with the area prevented me from shooting this train again along the scenic portions of the Seward Highway, but I would eventually get another chance just north of Girdwood.

ARR 4009
Title:  ARR 4009
Description:  The rear of a southbound coal train snakes into Girdwood. The journey out of Anchorage is flat for miles as the line slinks along the Turnagain Arm making the 4x3 power sets look a little out of place, but once south of Girdwood, where the grade sharply increases, all of those 7 MACs will be put to use!

ARR 4320
Title:  ARR 4320
Description:  Freight bound for Whittier snakes south along the scenic Turnagain Arm. I was set up waiting for a nourthbound train and had no idea this guy was coming until I heard the crew call the dispatcher to report a faulty defect detector. Fortunately I was able to re-position to a different turnout to capture this scene.

Title:  ARR 4003

ARR 4321
Title:  ARR 4321
Description:  As the days were getting longer, the Aurora Winter Train became a viable option to go and shoot. During the winter, this train will leave Anchorage on Saturday morning and run to Fairbanks. The next morning, it will depart Fairbanks and head back home to Anchorage. Here it is running through the middle of nowhere (I was out on some snow mobile trail somewhere) on its weekly Sunday run.

ARR 4317
Title:  ARR 4317
Description:  After being gone for almost a month to Colorado to move my family and the rest of my stuff up to Alaska, all that record snowfall in the Anchorage-area had completely melted and I was left with lots of green! The daily Denali Star is seen here on the last legs of its 12-hour trip from Fairbanks.

Title:  ARR 4011
Description:  The daily Anchorage-Fairbanks manifest accelerates through Elmendorf AFB not long after the arrival of the southbound Denali Star. A grab shot with a Canon Powershot SD1000 (hence the pole out of the cab, the shadow on the nose, and the cutoff signal ladder on the right!).

ARR 3001
Title:  ARR 3001
Description:  This matched set of as-delivered black Geeps have been paired together for the past few weeks. They can be seen hanging out around the engine shops on the south end of the yard, and I've been wanting a shot of them for quite some time. One tidbit: You would think ARR 3001 would be the class unit of these GP40-2s, but trailing ARR 3006 is actually the class unit. It was built as ARR 3000, and, for some reason, it was re-numbered to 3006. Anyone know when or why?

Description:  The Denali Star eases into Anchorage just moments from its station stop. This was the first time I've seen a non-HEP, 4000hp MAC leading a passenger train here. 16 Jul was the beginning of an incredible 3-day run of sunny skies in the Anchorage area, something that's been a rarity this summer!
