Album Info:All pictures from scans. Photos taken at the Pennsylvania Lumber Museum. Per museum signage, their Shay locomotive was built in 1912 by the Lima Locomotive Works in Lima, Ohio (construction no. 2598). The weight is reported as 70 tons. Last used in the mid-1950's by the Ely-Thomas Lumber Co. of Fenwick, WV and was brought to the museum in 1964. Often nicknamed "stem-winder" the Shay was the most popular of the "geared"'locomotives as it had good traction on steep grades, sharp curves, and uneven trac`. Locomotives like this would pull about 22 cars of logs. When sawn this would make around 100,000 B.F. of lumber. (Information from the Bucktail Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society).
