Description:  I just saw a photo of this unit as IC 5005 (Rick Morgan's album "Illinois") in which it was observed that it needed a bath. Well, it eventually got one as well as new paint - the short-lived orange and black scheme. That livery never really caught on -- kinda like GE locos on the IC/ICG.

Description:  This GP40 - seen here working the ICG/Conrail interchange in Effingham, IL - was built as IC 3055 in Feb 1967. In March 1982, it was sold to KCS where it became unit #791. It was later rebuilt to a GP40WH-2 and became MARC 65. By 9/2010 it was retired and would eventually end up in Boise, ID at Motive Power Industries. Who would have guessed back in '79 that it would have such a colorful history?.

Description:  Looking at this scene, you might well imagine it to be immediately post-merger with the Illinois Central Green Diamond geep leading the GM&O GP38. Only the trailing Paducah re-build suggest that it may be a bit later. It is, in fact, a full seven years and counting since the birth of Illinois Central Gulf as this freight rolls through Freeburg, Illinois the day after Christmas in 1979.

This train rolled by the weather-beaten remains of the old passenger depot in Freeburg, IL with five units -- one GP8, one GP10, one GP11 (in the short-lived all orange paint scheme), a GP30, and a GP35 still wearing GM&O number and colors. ICG was nothing if not colorful back then.

Description:  OK, this one is not in Southern Illinois. This unit coal train is on the Missouri Pacific heading estbound into St. Louis. ICG ran coal drags on MOP from Kansas City to power plants in Illinois. Even though those plants are in the middle of Illinois coal mining country, they had to import low-sulphur coal from Wyoming to meet EPA requirements.

Description:  In the Fall of 86 I stumbled upon a string of SD40s in the MoPac/UP Chouteau Ave yard in St. Louis. For years I had assumed that they were bound for either re-sale or a more inglorious fate. Such was not the case, however, for ICG 6002. It would be re-built to an SD40-2R and continue to ply the rails in IC black for another 20+ years. .

Description:  There is a real beauty of a portrait of this lead GP40 by Andrew Koenigsberg (in his album Some misc. roster shots) from the Summer of 1978. Lets just say that by the Winter of 87, it was looking pretty rough. The 2nd unit is interesting not just because it is still in GM&O colors, but because there are two different stories about its eventual fate. One has it going to Goderich & Exeter 9543 (later re-numbered GEXR 3835), The other having it end up with NECR via Conrail and then Helm Leasing. Guess I'll need to look into that further..

Description:  Wow, does anything say 1980s quite like the old Dodge Rampage? Always found them to be rather unfortunate looking vehicles myself. But speaking of not seeing it anymore, you certainly won't see this or any other railroad action in Red Bud, IL anymore. Rather surprised to find there are no other photos from this location. -- I know there are some out there. Here, an ex-GM&O geep trundles a local turn along the - now abandoned - ex-GM&O line past the ex-GM&O depot in the Spring of 87.
