Album Info:I lived in Endicott NY from 1988 through 2006, an interesting time to be a rail photographer on the former Erie Lackawanna. This album shows Conrail trains on the former EL Susquehanna Division from Endicott to Gang Mills, as well as some connected lines, such as the ex LV Ithaca Branch and Lehigh Line in nearby PA, and the ex NYC line from Corning to Wellsboro PA

Underpowered
Title:  Underpowered
Description:  OIBU must have had a unit go down somewhere, as it was very unusual to see a single unit on this train, which, though car count could vary widely, usually ran upwards of 75 cars. Todays effort has but one C30-7A to get it to at least Gang Mills, where hopefully it will get a companion for the rest of the trip.

Description:  An empty XWB coal train from the NYSEG plant in Ithaca has reached block limit station WAVE(at right, small blue sign) and is now entering the Southern Tier Line. The train is being handled by a Gang Mills crew, and is symbolled WACG 30; the train will eventually go back to a mine in southwestern PA near Brownsville.

Laying over
Title:  Laying over
Description:  An eastbound rail train is done for the time being, and is sitting on the east siding at Waverly. An SD 40-2 is the power today, rather uncommon for one of these moves, since they tended to get older power, a lot of times, U23Bs. How about that PC gon behind the power??

Stacks and a TBS
Title:  Stacks and a TBS
Description:  No, not Turner Broadcasting. It was Conrail terminology for Temporary Block Station. Due to trackwork, trains were running wrong side from Waverly to Elmira, and there was a conductor stationed there, working out of his van, to hand up orders and throw switches. TV 303 is getting the orders today.

Coal empties
Title:  Coal empties
Description:  Conrail symbolled the moves to the Ithaca Branch with a variety of numbers, depending on what job had the task of running the trains to the NYSEG plant in Ludlowville. Typically, it would be a Corning based crew, but sometimes it was called WAIT 2. Today, its WACG02 bringing the train off the Lehigh Secondary and through the crossovers onto the Tier.

Unremarked pair
Title:  Unremarked pair
Description:  There was a side road to a water plant just off NY 17C. It was about 1/4 mile down to the tracks, then across to the plant. The road was usually closed off by a gate, but sometimes it would be open. I came on it open one weekend when I knew OIBU was approaching, so I went down to set up at the pair of signals I often saw from the road. This is the result. Wish I had pursued it more, and gotten all the different trains that ran here at this location.

Eastbound coal
Title:  Eastbound coal
Description:  An eastbound coal train for NYSEGs Goudy station in Johnson City splits the semaphores at Tioga Center behind a single unit. Note the bottom light on the westbound signal is lit. A westbound is in the block, so well get two here. The crossing gate and relay case sit on the former LV Auburn Branch right of way.

Dropping the blade
Title:  Dropping the blade
Description:  I wanted to get the shot of BUOI splitting the semaphores, but a Conrail crew was working on the installation of new crossing protection. I backed off a few hundred feet, and got the blades, and the crew. The crossing here, Ayers Rd, previously had only crossbucks, and now would have gates and flashers. The semaphores would last another year. The roadway to the right of the tracks, and where the relay case is for the crossing protection, was once the LV Auburn Branch, which ran parallel to the EL from Owego to Waverly.

OIBU on the river
Title:  OIBU on the river
Description:  OIBU runs along the Susquehanna at one of my favorite spots with a long cut of empty hoppers head out. Sometimes, rather than have the cars wait for the next Goudy coal train, Conrail would run them back to Buffalo on OIBU, then forward them from there in regular trains.

Rounding the curve
Title:  Rounding the curve
Description:  This spot was a good place for photo, though most fans paid more attention to the semaphores a mile to the east. Ayres Rd, which crossed the tracks at the signals, came back around and went over them on a bridge. By this time, the bridge was closed and the deck removed, but the end of it was still a good spot. We see OIBU rolling west approaching it, at the same spot where Bob Wilt caught the LV Sayre Turn, which ran on the now abandoned LV Auburn Branch, being overtaken by an EL westbound, seen on page 79 of EL in Color, Vol 2.

Mc Master St
Title:  Mc Master St
Description:  There was once a road crossing here at Mc Master St, which was closed, but gates installed to allow for pedestrian crossings. Some motorists didnt take the hint, as you can see by the various barriers that have been installed. Some people are remarkably creative when it comes to stupidity, and even after these were put up, occasionally a driver would get hung up on the crossing here. OIBU has no such obstacles today, and rolls on by with a pair of C36-7s.
