Morning westbound
Title:  Morning westbound
Description:  The first train I saw when I arrived that day was Q 115, coming right out of the early sun with 202 stack platforms. CSX was continuing Conrails practice of monster stack trains. The eight units should be sufficient to get the train over the road on the virtually gradeless Water Level Route, though their muscle will be appreciated in the climb up the Niagara Escarpment 60 or so miles farther on.

Description:  A southbound grain train approaches the diamond for the ex EL at Marion running on the ex C&O. Both lines are now CSX, but the EL line is actually part of the ex NYC, which had joint track through here with EL as part of its Big Four route to Indianapolis. Note the cut outs on the pilot of 8866; they have been modified to run in the third rail territory on Metro North south of Croton Harmon on trains to Oak Point Yard in the Bronx.

Description:  I was able to get out to see the action on Georgias W&A line, now part of CSX, during a family visit. They were playing the part of the L&N, rolling three trains past me in the two hours I was there. This southbound merchandise train was the first to show, with 73 cars rolling past the Marietta station.

Description:  The CSX W&A line was chartered in the 1830s, and has a storied history. It is owned by the state of Georgia, and leased by CSX. The railroad was making good use of it this day, as a 128 cars of southbound coal roll past the historic Marietta station.

Description:  A southbound intermodal train comes off the NS Memphis District bridge over the Tennessee River at Decatur. I had to run to get this shot. I was a block away looking at the antebellum Burleson Home when I saw the train coming over the bridge. Fortunately, its speed restricted, since Im not that fast any more. I got a little chain link in the photo, too, but such are the hazards of modern railfanning. Nice to see I can still run.

Description:  I was sitting at a light when this train showed up on the overpass. Fortunately, I keep the camera at the ready for just such an occasion. The only thing that made it a challenge was the tow truck that turned as I took the shot, partly obscuring the lead unit, and throwing off the auto focus. Thats the chance you take with a grab shot.

Description:  I had a little free time during a recent trip to Cleveland, so was able to get out and check the action for a short while. I picked a spot east of Cleveland where the NS and CSX run adjacent, which they do most of the way to Buffalo. CSX chipped in two trains and a Sperry car while I was there.
