Title:  New GEs
Description:  CSX and NS picked up new units from GE in Erie PA, often running them in revenue service til they were delivered to their owners. Here we see a pair of spanking new units headed east on the Chicago Line. Theyll get to UP eventually. I often think some units follow me around. The trailing unit, 6628, is one I would encounter again, but not for another ten years. I caught it in the lead on a coal train in Nebraska in 2011.

Description:  We were riding around Syracuse one day and saw this guy rolling west. We were in my wifes 2001 Stratus R/T, the 5 speed. She asked if I wanted to chase it. I told here there was almost no chance of catching up, given the track speed on the Water Level Route. Next thing, we were on the Thruway going 90 MPH. We beat him to Weedsport, just barely.

Description:  CSX is unusual among class 1 roads, in that it starts its locomotive numbering with 1. This is the lowest numbered unit I have seen, #9, leading 109 cars of K 277 at South Plainfield as it heads for, among other places, a landfill in the south, as much of the consist is trash containers.

Description:  On the way back from Georgia, we stopped at the observation deck at the north end of the US 19 bridge at Fayetteville WV-the bridge they close one day a year so the base jumpers can parachute and bungee jump from its deck, 876 feet above the New River. I am not so adventurous, but Im more than willing to take train pictures from up there. I was lucky enough to catch this eastbound coal train, led by an SD 70M, from the deck.

Union Station
Title:  Union Station
Description:  The NYC station at Utica was really a union station, in that it was also used by the DLW, which came up Schuyler St through town. That part of the operation is still run by the NYSW, serving, among others, Matts Brewing Co. The last DLW train here was in the 1950s. The station is still used by Amtrak, and its a good place to see CSX action as well, such as this 91 car eastbound.

Description:  Conrail leading arm LMS had a group of C40-8s that it shared with CN, but which were painted CR blue. One of them has made it onto CSX, and is leading this 84 car auto rack train west. Note also the second unit, a GP 15-1. This is one of the units CSX got in the Conrail split-CR had 100 of them, new in 1979. Chessie acquired 25 of its own, a turbocharged variation called a GP15T-1, in 1982.

Description:  Ex Conrail units were getting to be unusual by this time, so it was nice to get one in the lead, and a rare one at that: this is one of only 10 C30-7's on the CR roster. All their other C30's were C30-7A, a 12 cylinder version that put out the same horsepower. The trailing unit here is also ex CR, now repainted for CSX.
