Album Info:Brunswick is the junction point for 2 branch lines off of Maine Central's coastal main, known as the 'Lower Road'. To the north east runs 'Lewiston Lower' and to the east the Rockland Branch. At the time of the earlest photos in this series both branch lines had as many as 6 daily passenger moves each. The Lower Road main line, added another 6 or more passenger moves. Add to this all the freight traffic & you've got a lot of business in this medium sized Mane College town. Today both branch lines still exist, although traffic is minimal and the main line is just a single track between the two junctions. The main which follows the Kennebec River north & east towards Augusta is not in regular use although the track has been kept servicable. /DL

Description:  C1910. An MEC ClassE built in May of 1892 as #23 it was renumbered to #58 in 1900. This was one of the last locomotives to come from the Portland Works which closed in 1892. Cly17x24 with 62 inch drivers. This locomotive was scrapped in May of 1915. /DL

Description:  c1913. The date is an estimate. I bought a number of photographs on ebay a few years ago that came from the estate of an EVANS. The seller didn’t know what generation took all the material. Most of that series is in the Maine Central – Brunswick, Maine folder on this web site. For me the train in the scene isn’t nearly as important as the coal yard and track layout. If I’m properly indexed this photograph was taken atop the Spring Street over pass looking west. The switch that the train is passing over would be the west switch of the Y for Lewiston Lower. Someone correct me if I’ve miss identified this scene... /DL
