Dark units over the river
Title:  Dark units over the river
Description:  41T gets its all black consist underway across the Chenango River on a gloomy afternoon. The conditions will improve markedly by the time the train reaches Owego. At this time, it was common to see IC units on this train, mostly SD 40's, but occasionally SD 70's would show. I think I've seen more IC power on the Southern Tier than on the IC itself.

Making hay while the sun shines
Title:  Making hay while the sun shines
Description:  Or in this case, cutting down the corn stalks. The heavy overcast at Binghamton has yielded to bright sun at Miller Beach Rd, as 41T rolls its 62 cars west past a grain wagon that carries the colors of a now vanquished granger road.

Color in the gloom
Title:  Color in the gloom
Description:  The weather in the Tier was quite changeable, and could go from sunny and bright to dismal in an instant. Today was one of those days. After a somewhat sunny shot at Endicott, I now have to contend with the ever present gloom at Endwell. The color is still holding up a little as 40T rolls east along the George F Highway.

Unusual power
Title:  Unusual power
Description:  Its typical to see the home road power on its own trains, but on this train, 41T, thats more of an anomaly than common occurrence. 41T is a run through with CN that almost always gets CN power. The southbound edition, 40T, must have gotten into Enola too late to turn the power for 41T, or there was another problem somewhere, resulting in a set of NS power on the train today, seen at QD yard for a crew change. An added surprise is the CR painted straight SD 70.

Title:  By a nose
Description:  Well, they are thoroughbreds, right?? 41Ts head end is pulled up just short of the power on H 01, making for this side by side shot. We also get a good look at some of the older buildings along Chenango St.

Title:  SD 50
Description:  There were still a few of these on NS at this time, through they were already 20 years old. Many of the units in service stayed in their Conrail paint to retirement, as is this one at the west end of Gang Mills.

Local rolling through Goodrich Settlement
Title:  Local rolling through Goodrich Settlement
Description:  There was a small place just west of Owego called Goodrich Settlement, reached by a road off NY 17C. As you went down toward the tracks, there was a panoramic view of the valley. We see H 88, the train that forwarded cars to the NYSW, rolling east here behind a pair of GEs.

Title:  12T on a typical Tier day
Description:  12T crosses the Chenango River on a typically bright Binghamton day. Power is even dark, and not the usual CN units, though the trailing unit is a surprise for anyone expecting a solid set of NS black.

Local in the snow
Title:  Local in the snow
Description:  A former CR GP15 and a GP 38 have 4 cars of local H2A(I swear, NS picks their symbols out of a hat!!) under control at Owego. The train is based in Elmira, and works as far east as Owego, much as CR's WEEL39 did in years past. They will be switching the Ward & Van Scoy mill, whose tower is seen behind the train.

Oddball
Title:  Oddball
Description:  Conrail had 100 GP15-1s, all new from EMD in 1979, which were scattered about the system in local service. Most of them survived to the split, with NS and CSX each getting some. CSX had some already, former Chessie units. On NS, they were orphans, and wound up in odd places. One is working the west end of local H2A(I swear, NS picks the letters and numbers out of a hat when they set up their train symbols) passing the Erie station, at right, in Owego.

Title:  Once there were two
Description:  H2A rolls toward Ayers Rd in Tioga Center. Once there were two railroads here, the EL and the LV. The Lehigh was pulled up almost immediately at Conrail startup, leaving just the EL line, on which the train is running. The LV right of way is where the car is parked.

Description:  Five units lead this 13T in the gloom of a December afternoon, approaching Hiawatha Rd. It's an interesting power set: four older GE's, including a C36-7, and a GP 50. Ten years prior, this would be first string power.

Never know what youll find
Title:  Never know what youll find
Description:  The power at Binghamton could be surprising, even in the post mega merger era. The BNSF unit came in on H 88, and was a regular visitor for several weeks. The ex P&W unit was leased to the NYSW before being sold. There might even be some NS power around. An NYSW unit is also in the act, hiding down by their shop.

Waited a long time for this
Title:  Waited a long time for this
Description:  Train 205 rolls across the Chemung River just after the sun dipped too low to light up the train. My friend Sam Botts and I had stood on the Main St bridge for about an hour anticipating a 13T with some kind of off line power. We were a little surprised when 205 showed. It was really cold that day-low 20s-and now almost dark. We called it quits after this. Thats railfanning!!

Unusual angle
Title:  Unusual angle
Description:  Most of the photos you see of trains on the Chenango River bridges are from the Clinton St bridge, or nearby, since thats the sun side, most of the time. There are limitied opportunities to shoot a photo on the other side-late in the day, or early morning in the summer, or on cloudy days. Ive taken advantage of Binghamtons legendary gray skies to get this shot of 41T with old and new EMDs crossing the Chenango, seen from McDonald Av on the north side of the bridge.

Wisconsin Central leads the way
Title:  Wisconsin Central leads the way
Description:  12T and 13T were the two trains that tended to get the unusual power. 40T and 41T commonly got CN power, and sometimes IC, rarely GT power, though on a couple of occasions a DWP unit showed, but it was generally all in the CN family. But the Allentown trains could be a treat, getting anything from a run of the mill set of wide cab GEs to ex Santa Fe warbonnets and UP flags, which were still something of a big deal then. Todays 12T is a winner, a pair of WC SD 45s leading an ex MPI lease unit now part of the Helm fleet, and an NS 4 motor, in bright sun with a deep mantle of snow. We see the train approaching the 45 MPH curve at MP 220, as it makes its way toward Owego.

Description:  From odd places. The leader is an ex Southern SD 40-2, still at it after all these years, and still with the high short hood that was the hallmark of Southern, and merger partner NW. The UP units were a surprise, since by this time, bigger power was standard, and many of the 40 line units were on locals or yard duty. But, 12T was an unusual train, and anything could show up.

Interesting stuff
Title:  Interesting stuff
Description:  An overview of QD yard shows a few interesting items. In the foreground is a set of power that came off a Goudy coal train. A trio of UP units, no stranger to coal service out west, are not that common here. Behind them is an NS SD40-2, one of the early ones that had been an NW unit originally. In the background, thats not a P&W unit. NYSW acquired some ex P&W units as part of their lease fleet. Most of them wound up working on the NYSW for a time, including this one, presently dozing away the afternoon. The NYSW proper also is showing the flag, as a yellowjacket from BH 2 comes around the corner from Bevier St, seen under the bridge in the distance.

Along North St
Title:  Along North St
Description:  A westbound empty coal train rolls west along North St in Endicott, past an old Erie searchlight signal, and just east of the site of the Erie station. An ex CR unit leads the way on this gloomy day.

87T
Title:  87T
Description:  Most of the coal trains that ran the Tier-which was most of them-had 500 series symbols. Occasionally, one would come to Binghamton via the ex LV and DLW from Enola. These would get an 87T(loads) and 88T(empties). This is an 87T, loads for NYSEG-Goudy in Johnson City, sitting on the ex DLW in Binghamton with an interesting mix of power.

Ready to go north
Title:  Ready to go north
Description:  This eastbound coal train has arrived on track 2 at QD, and will shortly get a CP crew and head north as train 8858. The western power came in all the way from Wyoming just for the occasion.

Special train
Title:  Special train
Description:  Binghamton was host to 2004s TRANSCAER meeting, a training event where first responders are trained in railroad practices and hazmat response. NS ran an office car train to the event, seen here on the ex DLW side while attendees are at the event. We didnt rate the F units, but we did get a pair of really clean SDs. The Siemens Exider train sits in the yard in the background.

12T on the DL side
Title:  12T on the DL side
Description:  A short(17 car) train 12T behind among other things, a pair of ex CR units, waits for a crew at Binghamton late in the day. This photo gives a good overview of the changes that have taken place in the DL&W station area over the years, and some things that have not changed as well. The train sits on the Johnson Running track, once track 1 on the DLW main, and designated Track 3 by EL. To the right, track DL4, once EL track 4 and originally DLWs eastbound main track 2, now is lifted over the Chenango River. West of the Susquehanna, the line is a walking trail through Vestal, and forms most of the right of way for NY 17 west to Elmira. At lower right, the station platforms are still in place, though deteriorating. The shed over the set out tracks is also still in place, though those tracks, which once served to hold set out sleepers and mail/express, and in later years equipment owned by the Susquehanna Valley RHS, are now "land locked", the switches to the main tracks removed during the construction of the baseball stadium, which is seen at right of the train. The stadium where the AA Binghamton Mets play, is on the site of the DLW freight house, and saw its first game in April 1992. To the right of the set out tracks is the stack for the station power house. The power house sits to the left of the stack, partly obscured by foliage. Partly visible at the right edge of the photo is a steel tower that was one of the original Marconi installations, now an engineering landmark. To the left of the train, the brick building and vehicles beyond it sit on the site of the Erie freighthouse, torn down several years earlier.

Unusual meet
Title:  Unusual meet
Description:  31T rolls slowly through QD yard, meeting the Siemens Transcaer train, on hand for first responder training for local fire and police departments. NS is showing the flag on the Transcaer train, but it looks like its UPs flag.

Transcaer
Title:  Transcaer
Description:  The Transcaer train, built by Siemens to train first responders, it visiting Binghamton today. Its powered by a UP unit, which I thought was odd. NS sent an office car train for their people, which had a pair of spanking new SD70M-2s, sadly, not the Fs.

Local working
Title:  Local working
Description:  H 12 with a pair of six axles stops next to the former LV station at Sayre, waiting for the word to shove a cut of cars into GE railcar. The banner next to the station says it will be opening soon-yet another restaurant in the old station.

Coal train
Title:  Coal train
Description:  Coal trains to AES Milliken Station north of Ithaca on the ex LV followed Conrails pattern in the NS era, running off the Southern Tier at Waverly onto the connection the the ex LV at Sayre, running the power around the train, then going north. Here we see a train that has just had the power cut off to change ends. Note the number boards on the lead unit, an ex LMS lease unit, with their CNJ typeface.

UP power on work train
Title:  UP power on work train
Description:  NS was not shy about borrowing other roads power for even mundane assignments. A pair of BNSF units ran on a local for several months in the Tier, and there were times when a pair of UP units did the same. Here we see one on a stone train. Its a long way from stack trains in Nebraska!! Of note is the C 420 on the adjacent track in the NYSW yard, along with what looks like an F unit. NYSW handled a lot of units for other short lines and regionals, and a lot of interesting power showed up from time to time.
