Home made
Title:  Home made
Description:  The CNJ, in bankruptcy since 1967, had to get creative to make improvements. The efficiencies of push pull trains were obvious, but there was no way they could pay for new equipment. As it was, it took a long time to get their new GP40Ps in the late 60s. So the cab cars were home built, from 1925 era coaches, modified with a cab and control stand. The fronts were sealed off, and given scare stripes. We see one from the PATH train, just east of Harrison, which was(and is, except the paranoid Port Authority will now chase you off if youre taking photos) a great place to watch NJT and Amtrak. This view also gives a cross section of the action here. The track on the right with the third rail is the PATH, once the Pennsy's own rapid transit connection to lower Manhattan. The tracks under the signal bridge are the Northeast Corridor, the former Pennsy main to New York and Jersey City. Beyond them, the westbound PATH track with its third rail. Past the open area, you can see another set of catenary supports. That's the ex DLW Morristown Line to Dover, its trains running out of the Lackawanna's Hoboken Terminal. They are adjacent to, but do not in this era, connect with, the Corridor. A connection will be built later on that allows trains off the Corridor to access Hoboken, and vice versa, allowing a midtown connection for NJ Transit trains off the Morristown Line to Penn Station. Beyond the DLW, we see a Conrail local freight, probably working Hartz Mountain, which had a large plant here. Lots going on.

All kinds of good stuff
Title:  All kinds of good stuff
Description:  This view of the Harrison lay up yard shows some of the variety of equipment that was running out of Newark in the late 70s. Most prominent is CR 4101, a former CNJ unit still in its original owners paint, though renumbered into the CR passenger unit series. To the left of the GP40P is a coach in Great Northern Big Sky blue, one of a fleet of cars acquired from BN at Amtrak start up, and used mostly on the NY & Long Branch, for which that train set became known as the "Bay Head Empire Builder." At right, we see the Reading RDCs used on the Crusader, which had another three years to live at this point. It used the CNJ via the Aldene Connection out to Bound Brook, then onto the Reading for the trip to Philly.

Arrows to Trenton
Title:  Arrows to Trenton
Description:  A train of Jersey Arrows pulls away from Newark on its way down the Corridor. I always liked the atmosphere of Newark Penn. It is large and cavernous, and really had the feel of big time, high density railroading-which, of course, it was.

Philly tonight
Title:  Philly tonight
Description:  Seen from the front window of a PATH train, were looking at the Crusader, the lone remnant of what had at one time been hourly service between Jersey City and Philly-Reading Terminal. Now two RDCs were the only train holding down that run, up from Philly in the morning, back in the afternoon, via Bound Brook and West Trenton. During the day, they laid over here, now ready for their departure back to Philadelphia. Also in this scene, we have an ex CNJ GP40P, and a partial view of one of CNJ's home built cab cars.

Title:  The Red Baron lives!!
Description:  One of the great things about riding past the NJDOT yard in Harrison was that you never knew what youd see, Here is one of the ex CNJ GP7Ps still sporting its red scheme and original number, albeit somewhat worse for wear. Note also the ex GN cars from the Bay Head Builder.

Getting ready to head back
Title:  Getting ready to head back
Description:  NJT 4110, an ex CNJ unit, has run around its train at Phillipsburg and is about to couple up and head back to Newark. The CNJ main, now the Raritan Line, had a mid day run to the end of the line in Philipsburg. Most of the outlying areas were served by trains that were geared to a NY commuter, so it was difficult at best to ride some of them from the New York end, as I was doing most of the time-and why I still have not gotten the miles on the Pascack Valley Line. This line was the exception, and I was able to ride it before it was cut west of High Bridge in the mid 1980's.

The only way to ride
Title:  The only way to ride
Description:  If you cant ride in the engine. Up until NJ Transit reequipped its trains, starting in the mid 1980s, there was a lot of hand me down equipment in service that had been owned by the predecessor roads, much of it cars that were rendered excess as train offs mounted in the 1960s, and finally when Amtrak started in 1971. Almost all of the cars had dutch doors, which were a wonderful place to ride on a nice day. The practice was long standing, and train crews generally didnt chase you. Im riding the NY & Long Branch down on the shore as we approach a station I cant recall, the train sweeping around a long curve behind a pair of E 8s. I always liked the signals on the Bay Head line, one of which is at left. They reminded me of the ACL.

Another relic
Title:  Another relic
Description:  Every railroad that ran in New Jersey put cars into the pool, and some still carried the name of their prior owners. Some of those heralds are scattered through this album, and the one on EL commuters. In this case, its a second hand herald we see. The CNJ statue is on the side of a stainless steel coach that once belonged to the Santa Fe.

Es waiting for the rush
Title:  Es waiting for the rush

The lead unit is not as obvious-you have to look at the end of the long hood to see the squared off section housing the steam generator to see it's a former CNJ GP7P.

E8s in an EL scheme
Title:  E8s in an EL scheme
Description:  A pair of Es arrive at Asbury Park with a PRR side train on the NY&LB in the original NJDOT scheme. It used the colors of the EL U34CHs, and in this original incarnation, the stripe went straight around the nose. A later version had the bow wave, which was much more attractive. Some observers noted that these units looked a lot like RF&Ps E units.
