Successor to a proud history
Title:  Successor to a proud history
Description:  As the northeast rail scene imploded, it became obvious to the states that assistance would be needed to continue the various commuter services that were provided by the railroads, who were taking a loss on them. Mostly it was PC, but also Reading, CNJ and EL were also in the mix. In Philadelphia, it was SEPTA who took on that mantle. An ex Pennsy car is at 30th St, no longer with a Keystone, but with the double arrow of the commuter authority.

Off to Valpo
Title:  Off to Valpo
Description:  The late 70s found a wide variety of commuter services in the Chicago area. Some, like the BN or Northwesterns, were extensive. Others were vestigal remains of larger plans, and a few were always small. One of the smaller ones was the single trip on the ex Pennsy out to Valparaiso Ind, which Conrail inherited from PC. It ran with a pair of GP 9s and some ex PRR P 70s, though after the EL Cleveland train quit in January 1977, the cars from that service came west and were added to the Valpo train. This is the way it looked in 1978, a pair of GPs and P 70s, seen leaving Union Station.

Oldest F unit
Title:  Oldest F unit
Description:  At the time I took this shot, there were a group of F 3s that rotated on and off the "Plug" as the ex GM&O train to Joliet was known. At the time, it was the only train on this line, a poor stepchild to ICGs electrified service to Matteson. The F 3s had the distinction of being the oldest road power then in use on a Class 1 road, having been built in 1946. There are now several trains on this route, but they dont have any of the charm of an F 3 and ex GM&O coaches.

Unusual power
Title:  Unusual power
Description:  In the late 60s and early 70s, EMD had quite a catalog, and built several variations on freight units for passenger service. One of the more unusual diesels was the F 40Cs they built for Milwaukee Road commuter trains, through a couple of mass transit districts north and west of Chicago. We see one of them here on the north side of Union Station, ready to head out to the northwest suburbs.

Afternoon line up
Title:  Afternoon line up
Description:  The Rock Island was the first to get the new F 40s, since it had the oldest power, most in need of updating. They were still running an E 6 and some E 7s on their Joliet trains til earlier that year. The first batch of F 40s is lined up at La Salle St, ready to go onto their trains for the evening rush. The Rock was still running the Quad Cities and Peoria Rockets at the time, behind E 8s. Looking back, it was quite a show. I wish I had paid more attention to it.

Rock herald
Title:  Rock herald
Description:  The Rock still had some "Harriman" coaches from the 1920s in service, a cut of which were at La Salle St. This is the herald and car number from one of them. The state of commuter railroads in America at the time was such that cars this old were not all that uncommon, especially on lines that had financial challenges, such as CNJ and PC.

More than just commuters
Title:  More than just commuters
Description:  Rock Island had stayed out of Amtrak at the beginning in 1971, largely because it lacked the funds to buy in. Thus, it still ran the two remaining trains of the once proud fleet of Rockets it had once stabled, and which ran til the end in March 1980. These were down to a couple of cars and an E 8, as in this view of the Quad Cities Rocket, ready for its 6:15 departure, as a Joliet train waits on the adjacent track with an F 40, just arrived as a replacement for the variety of E units-mostly E 8s, but a few E 7s, and the sole remaining E 6 in service in the US. The RTA unit is named for Rock on line community Tinley Park.

Title:  Wheres the Century??

New power, same old bilevels
Title:  New power, same old bilevels
Description:  The Rock bilevels were a fixture here, though the day I was there, I saw a lot of stainless cars. Where once these cars would have gone out behind one of the Rock Islands venerable E units, the newly created RTA, seeing the decrepitude of that fleet, has assigned the first set of F 40s.

Highliner
Title:  Highliner
Description:  I was waiting at the 53rd St station on the IC, letting the morning rush come past me, and caught this IC Highliner. This was a new thing for me. I had ridden on the LIRR double deckers at home, but these cars were really tall by comparison. This was my first trip to Chicago, and a real education on how other places do things.

Whatever works
Title:  Whatever works
Description:  The period in the late 70s/early 80s was a transitional one for northeastern commuter operations, as the railroads shed these services, and they were assumed by various governmental agencies. Ex PRR and B&O trains in Washington and Baltimore were no exception. During that time, much of the original owners equipment was used, though it was not always under its auspices. One such train is seen here, a B&O run out to Brunswick MD. MDOT-now MARC-had not really come into its own, and there was a lot of interesting equipment. The B&O GP 9 is a classic, as are the ex B&O car behind it, helping out with the new regime.

Ready to go
Title:  Ready to go
Description:  Just about anywhere. I was riding Amtrak into Washington, and was able to shoot this from the train as we rolled past Ivy City. Note the ex PRR MP 54 painted Washington Terminal. Chessie power was common on the B&O trains, which Maryland DOT had taken over, but did not have their own power to run. Thus we have B&O 6607 in the company of a variety of Amtrak units awaiting their next excursion. Interesting I should find a shot of B&O 6607. Its a unit number that seems to be everywhere for me. Ive shot CR, NS, and SOO units with this number, in addition to this one.
