Gate down |
Description: |
The crossing at the end of the siding, Lime Kiln Rd, crosses at an oblique angle, so the gate falls perpendicular to the road, and not exactly parallel to the tracks. So I caught it in this shot of the westbound passing the eastbound home signal. Oh well....this is what TRP calls "close but no cigar." |

The eastbound stack meets the westbound stack in what was the station area in town, now mostly an empty lot. The eastbound is almost done with its cross country trip, the westbound just getting into the meat of it. Hell be a lot farther west in several hours. Maybe not Amarillo by morning, but maybe overnight. BNSF doesnt waste any time with these trains. |

Gaining on him |
Description: |
I was driving north on Wis 35 trying to catch this westbound sand train that had passed me in Prairie du Chien, and had about caught him. I dont get to this part of Wisconsin but every couple of years, so of course the weather is dismal. We see a pair of GEs across one of the many side channels of the Mississippi, one still in warbonnet in a view from the side window of my Winnebago. Interestingly, the BNSF 777 is not the first unit of that number I have seen here. I shot SOO 777 across the river leading west in June 1987. |

Better angle |
Description: |
Youll see why when you look at the next photo. We were out for a day trip since the weather was so nice-sun, mid 70s, and we have the RV dewinterized, so were not restricted in our travels to how far we can go, but still get back for a bathroom, not a small consideration for two people past 60. We rolled into Vinita to see a southbound rolling on the UP. I decided to check the BNSF, since a lot of times there will be a train waiting, if theres one on the diamond. Sure enough, there was an eastbound stack train. I pulled in behind a gas station for the shot at the diamond. That shot was lackluster, but the going away shot here was better lit, and not obstructed. Have to remember that for next time.... |

Clutter |
Description: |
I wanted to get the shot of the stack train crossing the ex MKT, but the shot there for an eastbound in the afternoon is a bad angle. I was thinking Id work it so I could at least get the power and some train, but its so cluttered there, its just impossible, and I didnt have time to scout another view. Would have been great in the morning, or for a westbound, since I could have shot it nose on as he hit the crossing. Oh well. |

Waiting |
Description: |
This is the first of four shots of this westbound stack train, waiting east of the Madison Av crossing in Tulsa. We had dropped the RV off at Camping World for some work, and were riding through town, admiring all the Art Deco style buildings there, and decided to check out Union Depot. We crossed the tracks downtown, and saw this train holding back a ways, so went to check it out. NS 4132 leads a long string of double stacks. |

Eastbound at Folsom |
Description: |
In December 2023, I went to visit a good friend in Belen, NM. I didnt get to see much the first day out, but the second day of the trip was quite productive. As I pulled up to the crossing, an eastbound was approaching, a pair of GEs with 46 stack platforms and 33 TOFC in tow. |

Description: |
I ran I 40 west to Santa Rosa, then US 54 to Vaughn, then west on US 60 to reach Belen. I shot five trains on UPs ex Rock Island/SP line, and missed one, then started in earnest on the BNSF. My first encounter was an eastbound near here, just east of Encino. I saw the train coming out from under the US 60 overpass at the bottom of the hill, fogetting that BNSF runs their trains like theyre being chased by a fire breathing dragon, and missed the shot by the time I got turned around to get to the spot I wanted. Five minuted later, this eastbound showed up, and I was able to get this shot across the steppes, with Pedernal Mountain in the distance. |

Out of the sun |
Description: |
There is a small pull off with a historical marker along US 60 at Silio, where I stopped for a brief break. While there, an eastbound appeared out of the sinking sun with three units and 180 or so cars silhouetted against the landscape, which was now starting to show the mountainous terrain after miles of open plains. I'd spend til Monday morning with friends in Belen, then start my return. Photos from the two days in Belen are in the Two Mornings at Belen album. |

The day begins |
Description: |
I started back for home mid day on Dec 11, taking NM 47 to US 60. My first encounter was with a pair of trains at the NM 47 crossing, known as Sais. This westbound, with an eclectic mix of 60 freight, 39 stack platforms, 8 autoracks and two articulated racks, has just met a double move, a stack train with an oil train coupled up to the rear. I figured to catch him at the top of Abo Canyon. Not to be, I did get him at Mountainair, but othrwise, it was a futile chase. The Ferromex unit was a common sight on trains here. |

Yet another meet |
Description: |
An eastbound with 106 stack platforms passes the westbound on the north track. I left shortly after this, and never caught the eastbound, all the way to Vaughn. |

Westbound and folly |
Description: |
I ran across this westbound stack at Lucy, pulling off mostly deserted US 60 to get the shot. You can go a long way out here and not see anyone for a long time, yet for some reason known only to God and NMDOT, the road is posted 55 MPH. Idiocy!! |

Got ahead of me |
Description: |
The DPU on an eastbound rolls away from me east of Encino. I was trying to catch the head end, to no avail, but did get a shot of the Warbonnet on the rear. Theres a pull off on this hill, that I will spend an hour at next time I come this way. |

Rolling toward Pedernal Mountain |
Description: |
A westbound showed while I was climbing the hill out of Encino on US 60, which is four lane with a median there. By the time I could get turned around, I wasnt able to get the shot of the train coming at me. I did get this going away shot as the train rolls west toward Belen, with Pedernal Mountain in the distance. |

Long trains meet |
Description: |
The westbound in the previous shot approaches as the combined stack and oil train heads for Abo Canyon. Id hang a few minutes to shoot the westbound, but the eastbound, as big as it was, would beat me to the top of the canyon at Scholle. |

Meet in the sage |
Description: |
Once at the top of the grade in Scholle, US 60 follows the Transcon essentially within sight all the way to Vaughn, though the trains have a way of showing up at difficult spots. I was driving a Winnebago, which limited my flexibility in being able to change directions, so sometimes had to take a shot Id not have done otherwise. This is the meet of the combined stack/oil train, with BNSF 6929 at right, and a westbound behind bnsf 5721. This was the closest I got to passing the eastbound. |

Spent an hour here |
Description: |
Next time, Ill stay longer. The station here is a Santa Fe classic, and is in good shape, as it is used by BNSF MOW crews as a base of operations. Its also a wonderful photo prop, as we see with this westbound stack train |
