The UP came into posession of MP's line along the White River in 1984 at the time of the merger, but the MP folks were not enthusiastic about it. The first order of business was to strip out all the automatic detection equipment and otherwise downgrade the line. Locomotives assigned to the White River line were more often than not idling away the day. When the crews arrived for work, there was generally a good smoke show as the locomotives warmed up, blowing out the 12 to 16 idling hours of accumulated soot and condensation. |

Built in February 1972 (c/n 7344-41), this locomotive was owned by Helm Financial and leased to the Missouri Pacific as road number 898, renumbered to MP 2049 in 1974. On June 12, 1986, this unit was repainted to UP 2375. Upon expiration of the 15 year lease, this unit and 64 other leased GP38-2's (only MP 2031 stayed behind) were returned to Helm, 44 unit in July, 1987 and 20 unit in January 1988. Some were leased out to other railroads (this unit became HL 2375, still in UP paint), and some went to the GTW and were rebuilt. In February 1989, 29 units returned to the UP, and on July 14, 1989, this unit became UP 1818, leased from Helm. It became UP 318 on November 20, 2003. You may wonder how I got that headlight beam effect. This was about a 20 minute exposure, and the White River is off to the right about 1/4 mile or so. A mist or fog passed through during exposure, I thought it was nice. |

I was confused because utahrails.net lists two UP 1994 GP38-type locomotives in their roster pages. I finally determined that this was a GP38AC based on the electrical cabinet behind the cab in this shot, although early production GP38-2's had the same feature. This locomotive also has an L-shaped front window on the Engineer's side, not visible in this particular shot. Assuming that is correct, this locomotive was built as IC GP38AC 9414 (c/n 35679) and upon expiration of the lease in 1985 it was leased to MKT as 338, was renumbered to UP 1994 on January 10, 1989, was purchased by the UP October 23, 1996, on September 12, 1997 was renumbered to UP 1794, retired by the UP August 22, 2001. That's all I know, but I'll bet there is more to the story. |

So trains would be swapped at Cotter, the lesser horsepower locomotives would take the south/east train to Newport. This gave me the opportunity to get some night shots as the crews rested. |

This siding was out of service shortly after this photo was taken. A small stream passed behind the hardware store, and the siding crossed that stream on a wood trestle. It was a tight fit requiring a switch on the trestle to serve the tracks beyond. |
