UP Alco S4 1171
Title:  UP Alco S4 1171
Description:  Union Pacific Railroad Alco S4 1171 at Denver, Colorado on August 26, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive was built in July 1955 ( c/n 81393 ), retired by the UP in March 1972, sold to Chrome Crankshaft, resolded to the Yreka Western as 1171 in July 1972.

The Alco S4 was distinguished from the S2 by the trucks, and from the S3 by the large radiator intake grills. The S2 rode on Blunt trucks, and the S4 had AAR Type A trucks. The S3 ( and S1 ) had a shorter radiator ( taller than it was wide ), and a straight pipe-like exhaust stack, indicating that the S1 and S3 were not turbocharged. It had a model 539 six cylinder McIntosh & Seymour diesel engine. The 5 in the diesel model number indicates 12½ X 13 inch cylinders and the 39 denotes the first year the diesel was fired up on the test stand.

SI RS1 1211
Title:  SI RS1 1211
Description:  Spokane International RS1's 1211 and 1221 at Saint Joseph, Missouri on April 28, 1962, Kodachrome by Dick Rumbolz, Chuck Zeiler collection. Number 1211 was built in September 1949 as SI RS1 200 (c/n 77166) on Alco Shop Order S-3112, and after the UP gained control of the SI in 1958, it leased by the UP, repainted and renumbered into the UP system around 1962. It was retired in 1969 and traded to EMD. Note the extra headlight, for which I have no explanation. Aparently it last operated on Train 218.

UP RS1m 1270
Title:  UP RS1m 1270
Description:  UP RS1m 1270 at Omaha, Nebraska on an unknown day in February 1963, Kodachrome by Dick Rumbolz, Chuck Zeiler collection. This locomotive began as Bramberger Railroad RS1 570, built in May 1943 and equipped with a steam generator, used primarily to move troop trains to and from Hill Air Force Base in Utah. After the war, the locomotive was rebuilt by EMD, returned to Bramberger in 1951 with an EMD switcher hood and prime mover, retaining the GE electrical gear. In 1959, the UP assumed control of the portion of the Bramberger to Hill AFB and the 570 was sent to Omaha, repainted as UP 1270, and continued working for the UP until it was traded to EMD for new power in 1972. The Alco short hood was retained after the rebuild as was the original GE electrical gear (traction motors), I do not know if the steam generator remained in place.

UP RS1m 1270
Title:  UP RS1m 1270
Description:  UP RS1m 1270 at Omaha, Nebraska on an unknown day in January 1964, Kodachrome by Dick Rumbolz, Chuck Zeiler collection. This locomotive was built in May 1943 (c/n 70820) as a steam generator equipped RS1 by Alco for the Bramberger Railroad, road number 570.

The Bramberger was an electric railroad running between Ogden and Salt Lake City, Utah, but required a diesel to move troop trains in and out of Hill Air Force Base, which had no overhead wire. In service on the Bramberger, the 570 was equipped with a trolley pole at each end to activate the Nachod block signals. The War Production Board allocated the RS1 because the Bramberger was built to interurban standards which would not permit a long wheel base steam locomotive. After the war, the RS1, which had seen considerable service, was in need of an overhaul, first performed by Bramberger's shop forces, which lasted about four years before it was in need of a more extensive rebuilding. Julian Bramberger (president) approached EMD about rebuilding the locomotive (he happened to own stock in GM), and EMD agreed to rebuild the RS1, its third rebuilding effort. The 570 returned from EMD in December 1951 with a 1200 horsepwer 567B derated to 1000 horsepower and, of course, an EMD switcher hood on the long end, retaining the Alco short hood. The UP took over the portion of the Bramberger to Hill AFB in 1959 and the 570 was repainted to UP 1270 and based in Omaha. It was traded to EMD in 1972.

UP RS2 1295
Title:  UP RS2 1295
Description:  UP RS2 1295 at Lincoln, Nebraska on an unknown day in October 1963, Kodachrome by Dick Rumbolz, Chuck Zeiler collection. Number 1295 was built in January 1949 as UP RS2 1195 (c/n 76240) on Alco Shop Order S-3074, renumbered to 1295 in October 1955 to avoid conflict with new Alco S4's, retired in March 1968 and traded to EMD. The UP rostered five RS2's, road numbers 1191-1195, and after 1955, 1291-1295.

In my opinion, the Alco RS2 had the worst fuel filler location of any locomotive design, EVER. It's located on the cab sidewall, and you can see the fuel spill running through the word WEST. The fuel tank was located beneath the cab, also not a good plan IMO. On the other hand, I'm impressed that the UP added a nice all-weather cab window, and it appears that someone took the time to block off the hood top cab windows with brown paper.

Title:  UP H10-44 1301
Description:  UP H10-44 1301 at Council Bluffs, Iowa on an unknown day in January 1963, Kodachrome by Dick Rumbolz, Chuck Zeiler collection. Built in January 1947 (c/n L1025) on F-M Order LD-17, it was retired in February 1965 and traded to Alco in July 1966. This was one of five H10-44's on the UP (#'s 1300-1304), this one displays a rather large safety slogan on the cab, "Don't Be Curt Be Courteous" , and a photo in Jim Boyd's F-M book shows the slogan on the other side of 1301 was "Safety Is The Golden Rule In Action".

UP FA1 1632
Title:  UP FA1 1632
Description:  UP FA1 1632 built September 1948 (c/n 76003) retired February 1965, at Council Bluffs, Iowa, November 1962, photographer unknown, Chuck Zeiler collection. It is pictured with Farr Aire grills, a railroad modification. Farr Aire grills were superior in keeping rain and snow out of the engine room. The UP acquired FA1's and FB1's in three batches in 1947-48, for a total of 44 FA1's and 44 FB1's, making the UP the largest single owner of that model, 15% of Alco's production run. The UP primarily operated its fleet on the Los Angeles and Salt Lake line, and as a result Alco was able to advertise that the UP had assigned the highest tractive effort ratings to the FA/FB's over its severe 2.2% grades over Cajon Pass of any of its road freight power. The ratings for four-unit 6000 horsepower locomotives were 3000 tons eastbound and 4000 tons westbound. Unfortunatley, a welding defect in the engine block assembly struck the UP's FA/FB fleet, necessitating a 100% warranty replacement, and as a result, these 88 FA/FB's were the UP's last big acquisition from Alco. The problem was later found to be a process defect in the weldment between the saddle and block. The first indication of a cracked block was the failure of the crankshaft due to induced bearing misalignment. This problem resulted in the replacement of blocks and crankshafts in all 88 of UP's FA1's and FB1's. All told about 600 blocks had to be replaced before process improvements eliminated this problem.

UP FA1 1641
Title:  UP FA1 1641
Description:  UP FA1 1641 at Council Bluffs, Iowa on an unknown day in October 1963, Kodachrome by Dick Rumbolz, Chuck Zeiler collection. The UP acquired 44 FA1's and 44 FB1's in three batches in 1947-48, 15% of Alco's FA1 production. Unfortunately (fatally perhaps) problems developed, and every diesel block was replaced under a warranty program. The issue was a welding defect in the engine block assembly (around 600 of Alco's FA's were affected), and soured UP's opinion of locomotives from Alco. Problems continued after the replacement of the diesel blocks, as Alco continued to work on crankshaft alignment failures. The UP didn't purchase much from Alco after this experience.
