Description:  Amtrak 52 leads Amtrak train 50, the Eastbound Cardinal through Thurmond, WV. The coaling tower, old abandoned buildings and C&O cantilever signals still stand as reminders of the past at this historic location which is now part of the New River National Historic Park. The building on the right was once the C&O company store, then later the Post Office, now it is one of the many abandoned buildings which makes up the smallest incorporated city in West Virginia, population 7.

Description:  A rare visitor to this side of the river! CSXT 150 and another CSX AC4400 sit with an empty coal hopper train in NS's Dickinson Yard in Dickinson, WV waiting to be recrewed and taken up to Belva, WV. This is a detour train which is running on NS due to an out of service bridge on the CSX at Belva. In the distance is a pile of coal and the mountains on the other side of the Kanawha River.

Description:  Amtrak 176 and 2 other units lead P936, the New River leaf train through Handley, WV. The dust is really flying, as CSX has been replacing ties and ballast like crazy on the New River and Kanawha Subdivisions. It will be like a brand new railroad when they are done with it. The new river train was very impressive, with 10 amfleets and about 20 private cars including 3 domes.

Description:  SD40-2 NS 6191, GP60 NS 7111 and a couple CW40-9s sitting in the siding with a loaded coal train waiting on a recrew while SD70M-2 NS 2689 leads another loaded coal train that is currently being recrewed in the yard at Alloy, WV. These trains will head over the bridge at Deepwater to head East on the NS Princeton-Deepwater District which is the former Virginian Railway. Note the interesting striping on the pilot of NS 6191, there are not many painted like this and it is very reminiscant of how Southern painted their SD40-2's, even though this particular locomotive is of N&W heritage.

Description:  NS 6073 running engine light from the yard in Dickinson, WV to Alloy, WV to do some switching. It will return with about 10 covered hoppers. Note the construction going on to replace a road bridge on the other side of the ROW. This unit was one of the last order of SD40-2's from the N&W in the late 1970's and were the first units purchased with low short hood.

Description:  An empty coal train entering Bluefield Yard led by SD70 2504 and a loaded coal train leaving at the East end of Bluefield Yard at "RD" on a nice fall day. MOW crews are removing unused track as part of a yard reconfiguration which is still going on 4 years later. Conrail painted units were still fairly common at the time, as evidence by the Conrail CW40-8, the second unit in the loaded train was a leased Oakway SD60.
