Number 1 is on a Central Electric Railfans' Association sponsored fan trip from Chicago to (I believe) Michigan City and return, featuring sequential cars 1, 2, 3, and 4. Number 28 is on the rear of a regularly scheduled train.

Description:  Chicago South Shore & South Bend Railroad Pullman built coach 1 built by Pullman Car & Manufacturing Company at Michigan City Shops, Indiana, sometime in April 1975, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Number 1 headed a Central Electric Railfans Association sponsored fan trip from Chicago to Michigan City. This is a good example of a circuit break in the overhead wire. Notice that the wires crossing in front of the lead car are supplying power to separate parts of the overhead wire, and that wire is spliced by insulated sections. The insulators are visible covering the front truck of the lead car, and the other insulator is above the rear truck of the caboose in this view.

Description:  CSS&SB 2 at Michigan City, Indiana on an unknown day in May 1979, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Number 2 was built by Pullman Car and Manufacturing Company in 1926, one of ten of the first steel cars ordered by the Insull administration (road #'s 1 - 9). They were also the first cars to operate on 1500 volts DC. When first placed in service on July 13, 1926, they operated between Michigan City and South Bend until the rest of the railroad was converted from 6000 volts AC. This car is the original 60 foot length, rides on Baldwin 84-60AA trucks equipped with Westinghouse 4W567-C11 traction motors, weighs 133,400 pounds, and seats 56 passengers (16 in the smoking section).

Number 6 was built in 1926 by Pullman Car and Manufacturing Company as part of the first ten car order placed by the newly formed Chicago South Shore & South Bend Railroad, which took over control of the bankrupt Chicago Lake Shore & South Bend Railroad in 1926. Also seen (left to right) are trailer 204. 201, motor 6, and 704, the former NYC class R-2 343, rebuilt by the CSS&SB in 1956. The occasion was a Central Electric Railfans' Association sponsored fan trip.

Description:  CSS&SB Pullman 11 at Randolph Street, Chicago, Illinois, March 1979, photo by Chuck Zeiler. Number 11 was built by Paullman Car and Manufacturing Company in 1926, part of the 11-15 number series built on that order. As originally built it was 60' long and seated 56 passengers. In 1942 the South Shore began a program to increase the length of the 60' coaches, and by 1946, number 11 had a 17' 6" section cut into it, resulting in a seating increase from 56 to 80 passengers. This car represents one of the early rebuilds with the horns exposed. Later rebuilds had the horns mounted over the center of the roof and covered with a fairing.

Description:  CSS&SB Nippon Sharyo 11 at Bendix, South Bend, Indiana on July 27, 1986, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This is the Bendix station on the western edge of South Bend. The tracks were cut back to this point in 1970 to avoid street running.

This car was built by Nippon Sharyo in 1982, the second 11 on the South Shore. It was wrecked June 18, 1998 when it collided with a tractor-trailer loaded with steel coils weighing 19 tons each, one of which broke loose upon impact and rolled through the car destroying it. It was replaced by the NICD in 2001 with 3rd number 11. The NTSB report is at this address:

It is seen here at the South Bend coach yard about to return an Illini Railroad Club fan trip to Chicago, once the headlight is installed.

Description:  CSS&SB Pullman built 14 at Randolph Street Station, Chicago, Illinois, February 1982, photo by Chuck Zeiler. Number 14 was built by Pullman Car and Manufacturing Company in 1926. It was rebuilt in 1942 along with number 15, the beginning of a rebuilding program that encompassed 33 cars (I believe). The rebuilding process added 17 feet to the middle of what was a 60 foot car. Some of the later rebuilt cars also received air-conditioning and sealed picture windows.

Description:  CSS&SB Pullman built 14 and Nippon Sharyo built 17 at the Randolph Street Station in Chicago, Illinois on April 19, 1983, photo by Chuck Zeiler. Number 17 was built by Nippon Sharyo in 1982, was wrecked and destroyed January 21, 1985 at Gary, Indiana in a head-on collision with Nippon Sharyo 26, also destroyed. Both cars were replaced by NICD in 1992 with new cars that carry the same road numbers.
