SP 7342 - West Colton Yard, Bloomington, CA - 8/29/81
Title:  SP 7342 - West Colton Yard, Bloomington, CA - 8/29/81
Description:  SP SD40E 7342 (ex-SD40 8470) wore a unique paint scheme for a short time. Painted orange and gray, with scarlet ends, the lettering on the right side was white and on the left was red. The nose wings differed, too, as on the left side there were no orange "fingers" protruding into the scarlet. This engine, seen here at West Colton Yard in Bloomington, California, on August 29, 1981, would in short order be repainted into yet another experimental scheme with more scarlet, matching the scheme worn by rebuilt SD45 7399.

SBC 2309 - Mexicali BC, México - 11/14/81
Title:  SBC 2309 - Mexicali BC, México - 11/14/81
Description:  A pair of Ferrocarril Sonora–Baja California diesels switch cars in the SBC's rail yard in Mexicali, Baja California, on November 14, 1981. A pair of SBC GP40-2s, two-year-old 2309 and high-nosed 2108 (built in 1973), drag a cut of freight cars in the Mexicali yard. At the border with the United States (not too much farther than the radio tower in the distance), the SBC interchanges with the Southern Pacific. Note that SBC 2309 wears the colors of Nacionales de México, indicating that the era of independent Mexican railroads would soon be drawing to a close, when the SBD was absorbed into NdeM in 1987. (Other independent railroads in México were merged with the NdeM in the 1980s as well.)

Title:  AMTK 761
Description:  Switching Los Angeles Union Passenger Terminal on April 15th, 1982, is Amtrak GP7 761. The old GP is bringing in a cut of Amfleet cars for a "San Diegan." Amtrak 761 began life as Frisco GP7 621. It was later sold to Precision National Corporation (as their #621), who in turn sold it to Amtrak. Note the out-of-service tracks in the foreground, with the switch frog and points removed. Thirty years later, in 2012, things at LAUPT had gotten so busy that new trackage was installed!

UP 63
Title:  UP 63
Description:  On June 26th, 1982, Union Pacific SD45 63 sits in pieces as it receives an overhaul at the railroads Salt Lake City diesel shops. UP SD45s 60-65 were rebuilt by Morrison_Knudsen in Boise, Idaho, during 1980 to 1982 with Sulzer diesel engines from Switzerland as part of a test program. Look carefully at the carbody below the gaping hole in the long hood, and you can see where the carbody was widened by another two inches. UP 63 was built by EMD in April 1968 as UP 3613. It was later renumbered to UP 13, in October 1978. On July 8th, 1999, the engine would be renumbered once again to UP 4758.

Title:  UP 706
Description:  Shortly after sunrise on June 26th, 1982, a pair of Union Pacific GP30s were found in the railroads Roper Yard in Salt Lake City, Utah. Both UP 703 and UP 706 were built by EMD in February 1963. Number 703 was retired in March 1984 and sold for scrap in late 1985. NRE in turn sold it to the Soo Line in August 1988, and it was stored at SOOs Shoreham Yard in Minneapolis, MN, until it was eventually sold back to NRE in late 1992.

SNCT 101
Title:  SNCT 101
Description:  Sitting forelonely in the Seattle, Washington, docks is Seattle & North Coast Railroad F7A 101, which was seeing little use 1982. Built in October 1950 as Great Northern 274B, with the GN-NP-CB&Q-SP&S merger this engine became Burlington Northern 610. SNCT 101 would go on to work again before the demise of the railroad, and today it is DLMX 274, painted once again in Omaha Orange and Pullman Green. (That bad-ordered UP box car with the bulging door was coupled to this engine for at least eight months, as it was there in May 1983 as well.)

WP 3554 - Vernon CA - 04/08/83
Title:  WP 3554 - Vernon CA - 04/08/83
Description:  Located just five miles from downtown Los Angeles, the city of Vernon has a population of just 112 people (according to the 2010 United States Census), making it the city with the smallest population of any incorporated city in the state of California. (In contrast, adjacent city of Los Angeles had a population of 3,792,621 people in the same 2010 US Census.) Vernon is primarily composed of industrial areas (rail yards, meatpacking plants, a now closed battery recycling plant and warehouses) and touts itself as "exclusively industrial." As you can see, Vernon is a real garden spot! On April 8, 1983, a pair of recently acquired Western Pacific GP40-2s, consecutively numbered 3554 and 3555, lead the Union Pacific's westbound Mead Local past a billboard for new owner UP as it passes through the typically gritty landscape of Vernon. The Western Pacific (along with Missouri Pacific) was merged with the Union Pacific just the year before, and it would take several years for the much larger Union Pacific to wipe out the WP's identity. Southern California railfans, however, enjoyed the infusion of WP power while it lasted.

AMTK 283
Title:  AMTK 283
Description:  The final run of Amtraks state-supported overnight Sacramento to Los Angeles train, the "Spirit of California," has arrived in Los Angeles on October 1st, 1983. This service operated just two years before then-new governor George Deukmejian cut funding for the train. The train was no more, and things looked bleak for rail service in the early 1980s - even the iconic clock tower of Los Angeles Union Passenger Terminal (in the background) looks shabby. But while the "Spirit" would not return, passenger service in the Golden State would soon be booming, and Union Station would be served by not just Amtrak, but also Metrolink commuter trains and, improbably to us in 1983, even a subway and light rail trolleys! And Union Station itself would be restored to a brilliance it hadnt seen in decades, including the restoration of tracks that had been gone for years.
