Headed for Goulburn
Title:  Headed for Goulburn
Description:  Two 47-class units lead an empty ballast train 'up' (Eastbound) on the South Main. It's about 7km below the line's summit (2396') at Cullerin and is now doing max track speed of 115KPH (about 70MPH). Both of these Goninan-Cat 47-class units rated at about 1100HP and are actually owned by the Lauchlin Valley Railroad, a preservation group, which leases them to the Southern Shorthaul RR for operation. In this case they're working a push-pull ballast train (two units are at the rear end) for the government-owned track operation.

Museum Pieces at Work
Title:  Museum Pieces at Work
Description:  This is the rear end of a ballast train headed for Goulburn New South Wales. Both of the units shown, working push-pull style, are owned by a railfan preservation group and are leased for mainline operation. 4701 is a 1970's era 47-class unit powered by a roughly 1100HP Cat diesel. Two of its sisters are up front. 4204 is a true relic, a mid-50s era 42-class with classic EMD bulldog styling. In American terms, it's functionally a six-axled F9A. Although there are several similar EMD-Clyde designs in Australia, only six were built specifically under this NSW RY class; four survive with preservation groups.

GE/ALCO/EMD Power Climbing Morrison's Hill
Title:  GE/ALCO/EMD Power Climbing Morrison's Hill
Description:  An "Up" train is headed east out of Cootamundra while it works 17KM (10.5 miles) of roughly 1.3% grade to Morrison's Hill. The wide variety of power found in Australia is demonstrated in this picture; up front is GL-class unit GL-106, which was built as a 442-class with an Alco prime mover and subsequently re-built with a 3000HP GE engine. The second unit is 869, a 40+ year-old Goodwin/Alco DL-531, (South Australia RY 830-class) a roughly 1000HP unit still earning its keep. Last is an RL-class unit, built in 2005 with a 3500HP EMD 645 power plant. GL-106 is painted for lessor CFCL-A while the two trailers are in Coote Industrial green and yellow.

Goodwin/Alco DL-531
Title:  Goodwin/Alco DL-531
Description:  The Goodwin/Alco DL-531 is one of Australia's most important locomotive designs, having been built in large numbers (210) and proving useful for a multitude of duties. Most were built for New South Wales RY in the 48-class; a smaller number went to South Australia RY, where they were the 830-class. Built from 1959 to 1970, they carry a 6-251 engine rated at 950HP for traction. 833, shown here, was built for the SA Ry and is now stored in poor shape off the Cootamundra turntable.

PNR 81-class units at Coota
Title:  PNR 81-class units at Coota
Description:  Cootamundra New South Wales sits in the middle of the state's most productive wheat growing region. It's yard is usually full of power, particularly when grain is moving. Here two Pacific National grain trains sit in the town's yard awaiting movement south. The 81-class is similar mechanically to an American SD40-2 with a 3000HP EMD 645 engine inside. They're fairly common in New South Wales, with 84 being built.
