B&O Business Car 98
Title:  B&O Business Car 98
Description:  Baltimore & Ohio Railroad Business Car 98 westbound on the rear of a CB&Q steam fan trip at Naperville, Illinois, October 17, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This car was on a few of the steam excursions led by 4960. It is seen here on a round trip to Streator, departing Chicago at 9:00 AM DST, leaving Aurora at 10:10 AM, returning to Chicago at 6:30 PM. It was sponsored by the Illini Railroad Club, the fare was $7.50. A nice place to be sitting, in my opinion. The following is from the B&OHS publication, The Sentinel (Vol. 33, No. 2): Built by Pullman and delivered to the B&O on November 15, 1917 to Plan 3334 in Lot 4467 as the 99A, the car was quickly renumbered to 98 in 1918. A 1940 record shows the car assigned to F. G. Hoskins, general manager in Baltimore, and a 1958 record shows the car assigned to W. R. Galloway, general manager of the central region in Pittsburgh. In 1964 the car was back in Baltimore assigned to John Edwards, general manager Eastern Region. In 1955, the six-wheel trucks under the 98 were converted to roller bearing trucks at a cost of $5,205 (try to do that today for that amount of money). Those trucks are still under the car. Number 98 was sold in 1965 to Ralph Atlass of the Intermountain Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society. The car was left in Baltimore & Ohio paint, according to several pictures of it running on western railroads. Later an individual in Chattanooga, Tennessee, purchased the car and donated it to the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum in Chattanooga. The then-president of the TVRM named the car Eden Isle, but retained the number 98. The car remains at TVRM and is used by the museum for charters over its six-mile railroad from Grand Junction Station to East Chattanooga Station and Charters range from $600 to $1600 depending on the trip. While the interior of the car is much the way it was in B&O service, the outside is now painted in an attractive maroon with gold lettering and striping. In their history of the 98, the TVRM states the car was assigned to an executive vice president of the Baltimore and Ohio and that could explain its low number, since cars with numbers 97 to 100 were normally assigned to top executives. They also show the car being rebuilt by the railroad in 1935, but that has not been verified. That could have been when air conditioning was added to the car. It remains a mystery why the car was first numbered 99A. Perhaps it was intended to back up Daniel Willard’s car 99, since he was known to travel the railroad extensively in his position as president. It was long before Universal Machine Language Equipment Register requirements that there be no alphas in the number field. The 99A number appears to have been assigned to the car for less than a year.

Description:  B&O E6 1411 eastbound on Train Number 6, The Capitol, at 63rd Street, Chicago, Illinois on October 10, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Note the airplane in the upper right, also eastbound. This locomotive was built as E6A 60 in June 1941 (c/n 1328) on EMD Order E388A, and originally shared road number 60 with its E6B mate. It was wrecked in a rear end collision at Dickerson, Maryland on September 24, 1942, rebuilt in-kind by EMD. It was renumbered to 60A during 1950, renumbered back to 60 during mid-April 1952, rebuilt by the B&O during December 1953, renumbered to 1411 during early 1957, out of service by January 1, 1967, sold to EMD during 1967 as trade-in credit on a SD40 order. Within approximately six miles there were five mainline railroad stations on 63rd Street at the time of this photo. This was the middle of the five, situated at 63rd Street (the name of the station) and Oakley Avenue (2300 west), serving the B&O, C&O, and Pere Marquette. The station house was built at ground level before the tracks were elevated and a stairway led to the upper level platforms.

It is seen here eastbound heading Train #6, The Capitol, stopping at the 63rd Street Station, having departed Grand Central Station at 4:30 PM. It will arrive at the Washington DC Union Station at 9:30 AM if all goes well.

Description:  B&O E7 1416 westbound at Pullman Junction located on the south side of Chicago, Illinois on April 20, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive was built as number 64 in February 1945 (c/n 1674) on EMD Order E492A, originally shared the road number with an E7A mate (which later became 1415), renumbered to 64A during April 1947, rebuilt by the B&O during February 1955, renumbered to 1416 during early 1957, sold for scrap to Naporano Iron and Metal (Newark, New Jersey) on May 17, 1968. I don't know what train this is, but it appears to be an Extra, judging by all the foreign coaches (either Milwaukee or UP) in the consist.

Description:  Baltimore & Ohio Railroad E8m 1435 eastbound at Pullman Junction on the south side of Chicago, Illinois on April 20, 1965, photo by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive was built in January 1938 as EA #54 (c/n 766) on EMC Order E188A. The B&O received the only EA's and EB's built (six of each), the EA's were numbered 51-56 and the EB's were numbered 51x-56x. The Second Diesel Spotters Guide states that all were rebuilt to E8m during 1953 (EMD Order 7507A). Number 52 had been transferred to the Alton in 1940 (which the B&O controlled at the time), eventually becoming GM&O 100A. All except 100A were scrapped during 1969-1971. As built, this locomotive was powered by two Winton 201A 12 cylinder prime movers producing 1800 horsepower. The rebuilt units were rated at 2000 horsepower due to reused components.

It is pictured heading Train 10-2, the daily Washington Express, departing Chicago's Grand Central Station at 11:35 AM CDT, scheduled to arrive at Washington DC Union Station at 7:05 AM. According to the June 1965 edition of the Official Guide, the coach fare from Chicago to Washington was $22.15. It appears that Train 10-2 continued on to Baltimore after arriving at Washington DC (I'm not sure about the routing to accomplish that). Equipment listed is as follows: Washington - Chicago Express Trains 9 and 10 Daily; Between Washington and Chicago, Sleeping Car 90, 101, 14 roomettes, 4 Double Bedrooms (Sleeping cars may be occupied at Washington until 8:00 AM EDT and at Chicago until 7:30 AM CDT); Reclining Seat Coaches, Washington to Chicago; Dining-Lounge Car, Chicago to Pittsburgh; Dining Car.

Description:  Baltimore & Ohio E-9 #1455 and Chesapeake & Ohio E-8 #4012 at Grand Central Station, Chicago, Illinois, February 27, 1966, photo by Chuck Zeiler Unfortunately, by the time I began photographing trains, Grand Central Station was in its final days. Most of the trains terminating there were already routed to other stations, and this station only saw the B&O and C&O. By the advent of Amtrak, this station fell into disuse and was soon demolished for re-development, but the property sat vacant for over a decade.

Built in November 1953 as B&O SD7 763 (c/n 18685) on EMD Order 5303, it was renumbered to B&O 7403 during early 1957, then renumbered to B&O 1829 during June 1964, assigned CSXT 9703 sometime after April 30, 1987 but not renumbered, retired by CSX July 29, 1987, sold to Steel Processing Corporation in Albertville, Alabama, shipped from there to Montana Rail Link on March 30, 1988, rebuilt by Livingston Rebuild Center, Livingston, Montana, outshopped February 28, 1990 as SD9u becoming BN 6245 (second), then BNSF 6144, then BNSF 1725, and retired from the BNSF in July 2008.

Description:  Baltimore & Ohio Railroad GP35 3547 passing below Akron Junction in Akron, Ohio on March 4, 1983, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. The engineer's cab heater intake is covered over, a common adjustment on EMD locomotives in winter. This locomotive was built in July 1964 (c/n 29379) on EMD Order 7736. I believe this was called Akron Junction. Fred Stuckman adds the following (valid as of 1/1/11, no kiddding) :

The tracks below are the old Cleveland line, it originates in Cleveland and winds it's way through eastern Ohio and ends at the Ohio River across from Wheeling WV. That line was originally called the CT&V (Cleveland Terminal & Valley). The line today is abandoned from Urichsville Ohio to the river. CSX still owns a small portion in Cleveland, CVSR from Cleveland to Akron, Metro, our bus company, from Akron to Canton. Wheeling & Lake Erie operates the Akron-Canton line for the industries and CVSR runs passenger excursions on it June through August. South of Canton, it's abandoned to Dover. From there to Urichsville is operated by RJ Corman. Finally, the Pennsy, CA&C (Cleveland Akron & Columbus) came onto the main just 100' or so to the left of that image at AY interlocking, and ran concurrent with the B&O until Warwick Ohio. (Clinton) From there, it would continue to Columbus. Each company owned one main track between AY and Warwick. From Hudson south, most of it is torn up. The track through Hudson is the Cleveland & Pittsburgh line. That has been PRR/PC/CR/NS, still quite active today.

Description:  B&O GP35 3684 at Akron Junction, Akron, Ohio on March 4, 1983, photo by Chuck Zeiler. There was a small service yard located just below Akron Junction on both sides. The rails the locomotives are on pass over the old B&O Cleveland line, which pass below through a short tunnel at Tower AY, located at the safety railings to the left. Fred Stuckman adds this:

From left to right in the frame: left two tracks are/were the Cleveland Akron & Columbus (CA&C/PRR/PC/CR), that's the line from Hudson to Columbus. The next two tracks, including the one the train is on are the B&O's New Castle Sub. Pittsburgh to Chicago. Finally, the track to the far right that diverges from the eastbound goes into the B&O Hill Yard and serves the coal tower. It looks pretty much the same today as in 1983, when you took that shot, except for the CA&C being completely removed. The track below the bridge the train is about to pass over is only active for summer tourist operations on the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railway. I have posted an album called B&O Boneyard, that shows how that area has changed. Also of interest might be the album called B&O Coal Tower. A third album shows the coal tower at night and is called Nightlife in the Boneyard.

Description:  B&O GP40 3739, Akron Junction, Akron, Ohio, March 4, 1983, photo by Chuck Zeiler. Overhead is the Akron Branch, which split off of the ex-PRR Valley Main at Hudson, Ohio, and ran southwest through Akron and Orrville, ending at Columbus. It was made redundant with the Penn Central merger by the ex-Big Four/NYC mainline between Cleveland and Columbus, and was mostly abandoned later when washouts took out several portions of the line. Out of the picture to the left is B&O's office and Tower AY, which controlled Akron Junction, the overhead tracks continued south to JO Interlocking, and South Akron Yard. From Akron Junction at MP 11.5 to Warwick Tower at MP 27, the PRR's Akron Branch and the Baltimore & Ohio main line had a joint-track arrangement. Operators at JO Tower on East Market Street controlled the intersection of the Erie Railroad with the B&O and PRR joint line, as well as the switches and signals at Akron Union Depot and, after 1967, Arkon Junction. Below is the B&O's Cleveland to Canton Valley Line curving to the right. The track to the left led to the coaling tower and small yard, and a connecting track between the Valley Line and the joint B&O/PRR tracks overhead, which the B&O called the Chicago Line.

Description:  B&O DR-4-4-1500 4201, La Grange, Illinois, November 15, 1964, photo by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive was built by Baldwin as the trailing cab of demonstrator 6001. Previous to October 1948, the styling of the DR-4-4-1500 was known as Babyface to the casual observer, and was first ordered by the CNJ in September 1945, not delivered (because of post-war material and labor shortages) until mid-1947. The only other Babyface DR-4-4-1500's ordered were for the NYC and MP, with no orders from May 1947 to October 1948, when the PRR ordered 26 cabs and 26 boosters. However, the PRR specified a cab units matching their Raymond Loewy-styled Baldwin passenger DR-6-4-2000 units delivered in 1947, which took their styling from the T-1 steam locomotive, a design which earned the diesels the nickname Sharknose. In November 1949, the PRR followed up with an order for eight more cabs and eight more boosters.

With no more orders for the DR-4-4-1500 on the books, in June 1949 Baldwin built demonstrator 6001, an A-B-B-A set, and sent it out on tour. Competing against EMD's F3 and Alco's FA1, no sales were forthcoming, although the tour may have influenced sales in the DR-4-4-1500's sucessor, the RF-16. The demonstrator was sold to the EJ&E December 22, 1950 under a lease-purchase agreement, the cabs were renumbered 700A and 701A (the pictured unit), and the boosters were 700B and 701B. They did not work out well on the EJ&E, and the poorly maintained units were transferred to the EJ&E's sister US Steel owned railroad, the DM&IR. On the DM&IR only two units (a cab and a booster) were found operable, and were renumbered 728-729, but not repainted from the EJ&E orange and green. Because of poor maintenance on the EJ&E, although the DR-4-4-1500's could out-perform matching sets of EMD F-units, their maintenance costs were three times as much. At the end of the EJ&E's lease-purchase agreement in 1955, all four units were sold to the B&O. Delivered to the B&O on March 11, 1955, the DR-4-4-1500's were renumbered 847-847X-849X-849 (the pictured unit was 849), refurbished at the Glenwood Shops (Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania) during April 1955, and put to work with the Baldwin RF-16's the B&O already had on the property. During 1957, the B&O renumbered the units to 4200-5200-5201-4201, and during 1961 number 4201 was equpipped with a snowplow pilot. It was retired January 31, 1963, traded to EMD on July 3, 1964 for new SD35's, and is pictured here on the Pielet Brothers (scrap yard) setout track across the IHB tracks from EMD's plant.

The tracks below are B&O rails running between Chicago and Pittsburgh. Fred Stuckman offers the following additional information:

In this photo, the train is headed west on the New Castle Sub. which is the Pittsburgh-Chicago line. The tracks below are the old Cleveland line. It originates in Cleveland and winds its way through eastern Ohio and ends at the Ohio River across from Wheeling West Virginia. That line was originally called the CT&V (Cleveland Terminal & Valley, part of the B&O). The line today is abandoned from Urichsville Ohio to the river. CSX still owns a small portion in Cleveland, CVSR (Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad) from Cleveland to Akron, Metro, our bus company, from Akron to Canton. Wheeling & Lake Erie operates the Akron-Canton line for the industries and CVSR runs passenger excursions on it June through August. South of Canton, it's abandoned to Dover. From there to Urichsville is operated by RJ Corman. Finally, the Pennsy, CA&C (Cleveland Akron & Columbus, part of the old PRR) came onto the main just 100' or so to the left of that image at AY interlocking, and ran concurrent with the B&O until Warwick Ohio. (Clinton) From there, it would continue to Columbus. Each company owned one main track between AY and Warwick. From Hudson south, most of it is torn up. The track through Hudson is the Cleveland & Pittsburgh line. That has been PRR/PC/CR/NS, still quite active today. The tower/depot at Hudson still stands, but efforts to preserve it have failed and so it will be razed soon.

Keeping the 4809 company on this day is CPR 8921, built in 1957 as MLW RSD-17 demonstrator (c/n 81603) on order 4901, first painted as CPR 7007, from May to December 1957, then CN 3899 from December 1957 to March 1958, then PGE 624 from April to October 1958. It was fully painted for each of these railroads. It was acquired by CPR in 1959 and became CPR 8921.
